The Old-Growth Forest Network is the first national organization working specifically to preserve ancient forests for the enjoyment of present and future generations. In counties capable of supporting forest growth we identify at least one forest that will be forever protected from logging and open to the public. Then we help families connect with these forests. The result will be a national network of treasured forests where all generations can experience native biodiversity and the beauty of nature.

Wood County, Ohio:

Wintergarden/St. John's Woods Nature Preserve!

In a snow covered forest a group of forest lovers happily hiked through the newest addition to the Old-Growth Forest Network on February 9.  Wintergarden/St. John's Woods Nature Preserve in Bowling Green, Ohio was brought into the Network largely through the efforts of Roger Mazzarella, the Wood County coordinator for Old-Growth Forest Network.   Mazzarella, who also volunteers for the Nature Preserve, became interested in putting Wintergarden into the Network after meeting Joan Maloof, at a symposium in Cleveland more than two years ago. Mazzarella has worked since then along with staff members of the Nature Preserve, Cinda Stutzman and Chris Gajewicz,  to complete the process.

How we can connect our love of trees with

our love and admiration of people

In March, the dedication of the Samuel P. Taylor State Park into the Old-Growth Forest Network was in memory of Betty Setzer who passed away in 2013 at the age of 94.  Betty loved California's redwood forests.  She grew up at Richardson Grove, near Willits, where her father operated the first campground.

We believe that having a forest dedication that honors or helps to memorialize someone you love, admire or remember is a wonderful combination.
