The Old-Growth Forest Network is the first national organization working specifically to preserve ancient forests for the enjoyment of present and future generations. In counties capable of supporting forest growth we identify at least one forest that will be forever protected from logging and open to the public. Then we help families connect with these forests. The result will be a national network of treasured forests where all generations can experience native biodiversity and the beauty of nature.

First Florida Forest Added to the Network!

Collier County, Florida, is the home of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary - 13,000 protected acres outside of Naples in southwest Florida.  Sixty years ago most of Southwest Florida's vast stands of cypress trees had already been clear-cut. A grassroots effort was launched to save this old-growth forest from imminent destruction. Concerned individuals and organizations from throughout South Florida came together and raised the funds to purchase the forest and surrounding wetlands from the logging company.  That effort led to the establishment of the Audubon sanctuary now saved for the perpetual enjoyment of the region's wildlife, residents and visitors.  Read More...

Community Forests Are Important Too!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if each community preserved a forest within its boundaries for the benefit and enjoyment of all its citizens - human and non-human? We think so.  Many communities have already taken that step. We applaud them and recognize their efforts by listing them on our website. We encourage other communities to do the same. Let us know about the Community Forest in your area.

Speaking Out for Threatened Forests

Old-Growth Forest Network supporters stand together to witness and speak out for ancient forests in danger of being destroyed. Here are some of the forest locations we are concerned about right now:

Tongass, Alaska

Salisbury, Maryland

Annapolis, Maryland

Kona, Hawaii

Mt. Sunapee, New Hampshire

Let us know if you want to be involved in helping to preserve these forests. Also, let us know if there are other threatened U.S. old-growth forests we should be speaking out for.

Exciting Financial News!

Thanks to an anonymous $5,000 donor the Old-Growth Forest Network was able to open an Endowment Fund at the Mid-Shore Community Foundation in Easton, MD (www.mscf.org; 410-820-8175).  Of course, we welcome additions to this fund! A long-term vision such as ours deserves long-term funding. (Our EIN is 45-4115570).

Last year we had our first gift of stock. Instead of cashing out his appreciated stock and paying taxes on the proceeds, our supporter donated directly to us. We also had a gift of land. Both of these helped tremendously.

In thinking long-term we also started a "Legacy Grove" for those who have included the Old-Growth Forest Network in their end-of-life planning. The first three seedlings in the grove are Will Cook, Joan Maloof, and Jamie Phillips. We'd love company!
