It has been a busy few months for Old-Growth Forest Network.   Read on about our latest state to enter the network, the new Forest Advocate Award and its Awardees, the winner of the Mary Byrd Davis Writer's Residency and our upcoming forest dedication in Maryland.  As always we thank you for your support and hope to see you in the forest!

First Georgia forest to enter the Old-Growth Forest Network 
Rick Foote, Joan Maloof, Lynn Kearns and Rob Stuart at Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve Dedication May 22, 2014.

On May 22 the Old-Growth Forest Network grew by another forest! 

 

The Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve was selected by the Old-Growth Forest Network to be the Hall County, Georgia representative. This was the first Georgia forest to be awarded this recognition. The Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve is a 1,400-acre woodland with walking paths, hiking trails, creeks, hills and a lake. The forest was originally protected to keep the water supply of Chicopee Village, a nearby mill town, clean. This allowed the forest to mature over time.

Old-Growth Forest Network Creates the

 

Forest Advocate Award

 

In October 2013,  the Old-Growth Forest Network initiated a new program to acknowledge the crusaders who work toward saving and protecting our precious woodlands.   Since then the award has been presented three times. You have read Joan's first two books ... and you have been looking forward to more!  Read about the Mary Byrd Davis Nature Writing Residency and what Joan is planning to write.  As a nature writer, Joan was selected to spend a month at Bordeneuve, a rustic, woodland retreat for artists, musicians and writers secluded in the foothills of the French Pyrenees.   Click here to learn more about what Joan has to say about Mary Byrd Davis, old-growth forests, and what she hopes to accomplish.

 

Our Next Dedication: 

Worcester County, Maryland

On Wednesday, June 11, 2014 the Prothonotary Birding Trail on The Nature Conservancy's Nassawango Creek Preserve will be inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network as the Worcester County, Maryland old-growth forest representative.   A brief dedication ceremony will be held at 4:30pm at the intersection of Creek Road and Nassawango Road, in Snow Hill, MD. Following the dedication ceremony there will be a trail hike and a celebratory wine tasting event at Bishop's Stock Gallery  (202 W. Green St, Snow Hill, MD, 21863).  Read more...
