Who's Speaking for the Trees?
Greetings! -
The Old-Growth Forest Network has had another great few months! We have dedicated an amazing redwood forest filled with towering trees, held some exciting fundraisers, started the Network of protected privately owned forests, and continued our work speaking out for threatened Community Forests. If you'd like to be more involved in the fun work of saving ancient forests, just email me at joan@oldgrowthforest.net. For the trees,
Joan Maloof

Network Adds Newest Forest
 | Joan at Humboldt State Park, California
|
The newest forest in the Network is the spectacular Rockefeller Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Humboldt County, California. The dedication was held on a beautiful September day, and it included a tour of the forest by naturalist Dave Stockton and a champagne reception hosted by supporters Christa and John Lyons. This photo shows Joan Maloof hugging one of the giant redwoods in the grove.

Network Launches Private Forest Program
 | Forest dedication at Hope Woods in Easton, Maryland
|
The first privately owned forest in our Network was dedicated on September 14. We held a dedication and reception at Peter Stifel's Hope House in Easton, Maryland to celebrate his signing of a "Forever Wild" conservation easement. This donated easement will protect eighty-five acres of mature forest that are home to a diverse community of plants and animals, including Delmarva Fox Squirrels. |

Salisbury Community Forest Faces Development
 | Development plans for a forest in Salisbury, Maryland
|
The 14-acre Salisbury Community Forest doesn't quite qualify as "old growth" because it was previously logged. However, in the hundred or so years since it was disturbed, the forest has recovered enough so people can get an idea of what our forests were once like. Now, the developer/owner plans to convert the forest into a residential community of up to 90 town homes. This forest is within walking distance of many homes and is at the headwaters of the Beaglin Branch of the Wicomico River. It provides exceptional recreation opportunities, and for visitors offers a grounding and even spiritual experience. The forest cleans the air by removing carbon dioxide and providing fresh oxygen. Forests also remove dust and suppress noise, so having this amenity nearby increases land values. We need help raising funds to purchase this forest so it can remain a Community Forest for all time. The Last Stand: Ancient Redwoods and the Bottom Line
 | Joan and Holiday Phelan-Johnson at "The Last Stand" showing
|
The dramatic story of the fight to save some of the world's largest old-growth redwoods, The Last Stand is a film produced by local filmmakers Holiday Phelan-Johnson and Christopher Johnson. OGFN sponsored the showing of this award-winning documentary at the Globe Theater in Berlin, Maryland on September 5. A pristine grove of old-growth redwoods, the Headwaters, was the largest unprotected redwood forest in the world. The film's true story is one of beauty and biodiversity, junk bonds and endangered salmon, car bombs and clear-cuts, corporate takeovers and corruption. ___________________________________________________ Make sure to "like" the Old Growth Forest Network on Facebook if you want to stay up to date on all our events.
