Tenyears10th Year Celebrations

As you are probably aware, this summer marks the tenth anniversary of our Petanque club.

We are expecting visitors from France, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Jersey and Guernsey to join our celebrations. While we are making arrangements to keep our visitors entertained throughout their stay, the main events fall on Saturday, Sunday and Monday 18/19/20 July.

On Saturday, we will be having the official opening of our new piste at Larkhall Sports Club, a full day tournament for Triples followed by an Evening BBQ with jazz band..

The event will start at 9.30 am with registration followed by the official opening of the new piste (so you should arrange to arrive around 9.30). You may enter your own triples team, or, if you cannot get a team together, enter as an individual   and you will then be allocated to a team.

The full cost of the day is  £15 per person which includes match entry fee a snack lunch and the evening bbq. For non playing guests, the cost will be £10.

On Sunday, we will having a melee in Queen Square, starting at 1.30pm. The cost will be £3 per player.

On Monday evening , we will be having a farewell dinner, for our visiting guests, at Aqua restaurant, Walcot Street, for our visiting guests before they return home.

The main purpose of this note is to ask you to let us know if you wish to play in the Saturday tournament,  We hope to invite some of our friends from other local clubs, but don't know how many to invite until we are clear how many of our members wish to play in the main tournament. We also attach a ticket form for the dinner on Monday evening.

Please complete the attached forms and return to me as soon as possible, and by 15th June at the latest.

Programme Details

Farewell Dinner

Some of the French visitors are staying for a whole week, and will be hosted by our members, who would appreciate a helping hand to allow them some time off during the week.  If you feel you could help out by hosting an evening meal for two, or giving lifts to meeting points and events, please contact lesley-hall@hotmail.co.uk with your offer.  A smattering of French would be an advantage.

Bases completed

After months of planning, meetings, problem solving and trouble shooting it was a huge relief to know that work on the new terrains started on 18th May.

With large plant on site and fair weather the topsoil was quickly removed and excavation started: revealing fine sand.  This was an unexpected bonus which meant that the ground was easy to work and the finished terrains should drain very effectively.

At the time of writing the drains are being installed and the base layer of stones will be next.  The contractors expect most of the work to be completed by the end of the first week in June, leaving just the access paths, turfing and re-seeding to be done.  All well ahead of schedule.

FranceA week  in  Provence.

Peter Mayle wrote his book about a year in Provence when he experienced living in this beautiful department of France but  although the City of Bath Pétanque Club only spent a week in 2015 many members were returning  for the 4th or maybe more visits.

Why should they keep returning  you may ask?

Aix en Provence is one of Bath's twin cities and Provence is very much the home of Pétanque . That combined with many other factors brought many of back to this charming city.

The tour of 2015 grabbed the interest of 11 players with at least 3 who had never experienced playing pétanque the French way. This tour has given many benefits to players. It has the potential to  lift our game to a more tactical way of playing by both observing and obtaining advice from more experienced and regular players.

Boules apart, the atmosphere in France has to be experienced to really appreciate what is on offer. Among the many things to enjoy is the Flower Market in Aix where in dappled sunlight you can sit amongst the green and colourful market stalls . Where do you see a continuous queue of people patiently waiting to purchase pots of flowers in bloom whilst listening to street music.? For the price of a coffee you can capture special moments amongst people of old fashioned culture.

The French cuisine continues to take you by surprise putting together ingredients and flavours that only the French seem to know about.

Lasting friendships  have been forged during many visits to our twin cities.

New to the league

WITH the start of the Bath Pétanque Thursday Boules league, boules players in Wiltshire can now play on a piste at the Tollgate Inn in Holt after its installation has finally been completed.

Owner Mark Hodges, first came up with the idea after playing a game of boules in Queen Square in Bath with a group of friends a couple of years ago and since being finished, he has seen a number of teams come forward and use the newly-refurbished pitch.

Mr Hodges said: "The feedback has been brilliant and some of the locals have even gone out to buy a new set of French boules ready to play."

A standard, 12x9m, size of a boules pitch allows for three games to be played at a time, although the piste at the pub has been extended to 14 x9m to allow players extra room.

Mr Hodges said he hopes the new feature of the pub will offer visitors an added attraction to visit the Tollgate Inn and he will soon be installing flood lights to allow teams to play in the evening.

The village attracts a buzz of boules every Boxing Day for the annual match and Mr Hodges, who has been owner of the Tollgate Inn for two and a half years, believes that the tradition should be carried on throughout the year.

OCTOverseas Club Trips
Alkmaar

The Club is planning a tour to Alkmaar in the Netherlands from 2nd to 6th October.  Alkmaar is one of the 4 cities that are twinned with Bath, and is a beautiful city well known for its cheese market, canal-side walks, and windmills, with plenty plenty of cafes  and bars to sit and enjoy the scenery.  The trip is timed to coincide with the liberation celebrations (music, parades, fun and games in the market square)  that take place over that weekend and on the Monday. The open doubles competition that attracts players from far and wide is on the Sunday and we have been invited to take part in a friendly melee at a local club on Saturday. There are regular KLM flights between Bristol and Amsterdam, and a good train service between there and Alkmaar.  We plan to stay in a hotel the city centre.  If you are interested in joining the tour, or would like more information, please contact diana@bathboules.co.uk

Piglet

Our Piglet (Cochonnet) corner

A sleepy French village is the scene

Mid-afternoon of a day so serene

Two locals relaxing at a sidewalk café

Each with a glass of nouveau Beaujolais

Discussing everything under the sun

World problems solved, talk is done

Next, it's the favorite French pastime sport

And off they go to the local "Boules" court

Friends, both passionate about this game,

Each aims to add another win to his name

The circle is drawn and the "cochonnet" tossed

Time will tell who's won and who has lost

Woe is he who's doesn't make a score

'Cause his ego will be bruised and sore

For him, it will be a fate worst than any

As he's escorted to the café to kiss "La Fanny"
