Greetings!

This is our third newsletter of the year and we seem to receiving more and more requests to include information. All you need to do is write the article, which the newsletter team will consider and then include providing it is thought it will be of interest to the members.

Latest Update on Larkhall Hall Piste
View towards the club house where the pistes will be placed

We have just received the revised plans from the engineer (attached).  Have a look at these and see what has been proposed. These have now been sent to Andrew Peters (our architect) and the planners (BANES) have advised that we will have to submit a new application. We have also been advised by Sports England that we need to request new bids for the work although the requirements are less than on the previous rounds. It is still proposed that the construction will happen during May and be completed by the time of our 10th year Anniversary.

Hi, I'm Andy Gutteridge and although I already know some of you, let me introduce myself ... I'm a single guy, living with my two cats near Weston Village where I've been for 5 years after growing up in Bristol and spending my working life so far in the South East. I earn my living as a consultant in Learning & Development and Business Change although I prefer to think of myself as a writer and photographer ... and the sooner I can leave work behind to do just that, the better! As for boules, I started playing last Spring and am currently in the winter doubles, after reaching the plate finals of the doubles last summer. This year I'm entering pretty much everything I can find, although I'll be balancing that with getting out on the hills and indulging other loves such as movies, music and technology. With boules, one of my big interests lies in how we can attract younger people into the game so we can bring the sort of energy and vibrancy to the club that only comes with a multi-generational group. See you on the piste sometime!

Cheers

Andy

Alkmaar

The Club is planning a tour to Alkmaar in the Netherlands from 2nd to 6th October.  Alkmaar is one of the 4 cities that are twinned with Bath, and is a beautiful city well known for its cheese market, canal-side walks, and windmills, with plenty plenty of cafes  and bars to sit and enjoy the scenery.  The trip is timed to coincide with the liberation celebrations (music, parades, fun and games in the market square)  that take place over that weekend and on the Monday. The open doubles competition that attracts players from far and wide is on the Sunday and we have been invited to take part in a friendly melee at a local club on Saturday. There are regular KLM flights between Bristol and Amsterdam, and a good train service between there and Alkmaar.  We plan to stay in a hotel the city centre.  If you are interested in joining the tour, or would like more information, please contact diana@bathboules.co.uk

Dust if you must.

Dust if you must, but wouldn't  it be better,

to paint a picture or write a letter,

bake a cake or plant a seed,

ponder the

difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there is not much time,

with rivers to swim and mountains to climb,

music to hear and books to read, friends to

cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there.

With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,

a flutter of snow, a shower of rain,

This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,

old age will come and it's not kind,

And when you go - and go you must,

You, yourself, will make more dust!

The Obedient Wife
There was a man, who had worked all his life and saved all of his money,
He was a real miser when it came to money. Just before he died, he said to his wife..."When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me.  I want to take my money to the afterlife."
So he got his wife to promise him, with all of her heart, that when he died, she would put all of the money into the casket with him.
Well, he died.
He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there - dressed in black and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, and just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said,
"Wait just a moment!"
She had a small metal box with her so she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and they rolled it away. Her friend said,
"'Girl, I know you were not foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband."
The loyal wife replied,
"I always keep my promises.
I cannot go back on my word.. I promised him that I was going to put that money into the casket with him."
The friend replied, "You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?!?!?"

"I sure did," said the wife.
"I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a cheque."

SweetPeas
Sweet Peas

Over the last couple of weeks you may well have heard a number of passing comments about the vagaries of growing sweet peas with skullduggery going on in an attempt to sabotage the other's attempts.
Why sweet peas?  Well, two years ago a couple of our club members decided to have a competition amongst themselves to see who could grow the first sweet pea blooms of the year with the winners putting on a cream tea for the losers. Odd way round you may well think but it was a novel competition. This year for the first time an additional 2 club members have entered the competition.
Would you be interested in taking up the challenge for next year. this is open to Club Members only. If so please talk to Terry Basson or Jim Canham.

Generation
Generation Cup
Strong interest has already been expressed by a number of members in a generation competition which will help encourage younger players to join the club. If successful we would look to expand it in 2016 when we have our new pistes at Larkhall Sports Club. The Competition will consist of teams of 3 with one from each generation, Grandparent, Parent and Child.  As it will be a new competition it will not be limited to club members. If you would be interested in participating in such a competition could you let either Terry Basson, Cary Bush or Mary Bradridge know so that we can try and plan  the competition.
We would also like to know when you think the competition should take place, the format as well as the type of entertainment that should also be put in place.

Sincerely,

Cary Bush
