Greetings!

Lesley Hall The sun has got his hat on!  What a difference it makes to play in such glorious weather, let's hope it continues till the end of the season.  OK, perhaps a little rain at night for the gardeners and farmers.

Our teams continue to do well in both Brunel and Bath Thursday league, there's always room for new players, so let Don or Mark know if you're interested.

This is our first year of running a singles competition for Club members, for the Peter Bale Cup.  If you've entered, please make sure you challenge those above you on the ladder, it's the only way to the top!  Test yourself against other members and see how well you can do.

I've represented the Club at two events this weekend, a 'Brocante' (French flea market) in Alice Park on Saturday, where I plonked myself under a parasol next to the piste and showed a few people how to play - two new contacts from that!   On Sunday I attended a Twinning Association lunch in celebration of Bastille Day at the Casanis restaurant.  All very French, with an accordian player, lovely food, and a rousing chorus of the Marseillaise.

Hope to see lots of you at the next melee on 27th July, and at our big fundraiser, the Bath Open Triples on 18th August.  There are still a few places left if you haven't yet signed up.

Bath Open
by Cary Bush
The time is upon us once again for the City of Bath Open Triples which will be held this year on Sunday August 18th at Queen Square. Due to the growing popularity pétanque and of the event the number of teams will be limited to 32 teams, and you are advised to apply early. Entry Fee is £45 a team which includes a ploughman's lunch, supplied by the Harington Club, for 3 people. Additional ploughman's lunches can be purchased. The planning for the event has been going on for the last 4 months and we are hoping that this will be the biggest and best so far. The City of Bath Pétanque 2012 Open proved to be a resounding success with all 32 places being taken.

Dinner at Bremen
Dinner after the Bremen Open 2011
Eight Members are now booked on this trip to our twin city of Braunschweig. We fly out on 1st October returning on the 6th. As part of the trip we are hoping to include a tour around the BMW factory, participation in the local pétanque tournament in Braunschweig and entering the Bremen Open. For those who have not attended a previous trip to our twin city this is an opportunity to experience excellent hospitality of our hosts, visit superb restaurants and even play the odd game of pétenque. If you would like to join us please let Don (01225 429146) know who will be happy to provide you with the details.

Aix en Provence
by Lesley Hall

For the tenth year 12 members of the club visited our twin city, Aix en Provence, to test our skills against the local clubs.

Group Lunch
Lunch with Renee and her family

During the week we were able to participate in tournaments at 5 different village clubs located around the city. For some of us, it was a welcome opportunity to revisit clubs and meet old friends from previous years while for members visiting for the first time it was a great opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of the city, its people and participate in a more competitive form of the game while also learning some of the finer points of the game from our hosts.

Winnings Di

Winnings Alex
Alex wins the competition.

Each participant pays an entry fee, enters a melee with players being drawn at random ensuring that the teams are mixed with the chance to win a small trophy and some money when participating in one of the winning teams.

For the first time in many years the majority of our members were part of a winning team and congratulations go to both Alex Robertson and Diane Greenaway who were our top earners.

We were also able to partake in a number of activities which were put on for us in the mornings by the Twinning Association including a visit to a wine estate, a walking tour of the city and a reception at the mayor's parlour.

Any club members who would be interested in joining the next tour to Aix please let Lesley know as planning is all ready under way .

Club Dinner
by Chris McGinn

The end of season dinner for the City of Bath Pétanque Club

will take place at the Market Inn on Friday 8 November.

The Market is situated opposite the Theatre Royal.

Last year it was held at Le Parisienne, which turned out to be a successful event, attended by 32 people. Due to Lease problems with the Restaurant, they could not guarantee that the Restaurant would be open in November.

Nevertheless, the Market looks an interesting alternative. We will have the room to ourselves. Overall, the place is larger than Le Parisienne and is on different levels, which gives the place a quirky feel. Entertainment will be provided by the Bristol Shantymen, who should provide a fitting end to the evening, by which time most of us will be well oiled and in a mood to join in the choruses.

Applications to attend, will be sent out in late September, together with a menu of various choices. I hope as many as possible will be able to attend and so end the season in a fitting and enjoyable manner'

Brunel League
by Don Grimes
We are 5th in the league and the team is settling down, which bodes well for the second half of the season. If you would like to be considered for a game please let Don or Mark know.
