Greetings!

Lesley Hall I write this on the eve of our departure for Aix-en-Provence for a week of pétanque in the sun.  Twelve intrepid members are making the trip, and will spend each afternoon playing in a different village club around Aix.  We don't play against them, that would be too humiliating, they generously include a Brit in each triples team in a mêlée, so our attempts are offset by their effortless skill.  Mind you, we have our moments of brilliance too, and nothing is better than hearing 'bien joué' from a team mate.

Hopefully we will include reports of the first few days in this newsletter.

Back home, the Thursday and Brunel leagues are both going well for club teams, who are all looking forward to warmer evenings.

The Club mêlée on 27th April was great fun, and Don has promised to organise more during the summer.

Our twitter account is growing slowly (@boulesBath), we now have 13 followers, mostly pétanque clubs and Bath people, who often 're-tweet' us, so we reach a new audience.

So it's 'au revoir' from me, and 'à bientôt'

Lesley

Brunel league
By Don Grimes
Our team has played 6 won 4 lost 1 and drawn 1, a credit to the club. We have used 17 players and will ask them  Bladud Headand others to play again. We generally take 8 to a game with a view to all playing 2 rounds if the state of the match permits. Our refreshments at the Bladud Arms have been excellent and they have the cheapest beer in Bath.

If you would like to play in the Brunel team but are unable to make  practice sessions which are held weekly at Alexandra Park  please let Don know by email at don@bathboules.co.uk  or call 07973342349
Aix-En-Provence Trip

Alex
Alex Robertson, winner of the initial inter club competitions at Puyricard.
Today is the second official day of the tour and this morning we were provided with a guided tour of the city followed by a reception at the town hall.
A few of the boulists travelled earlier and for the majority of the tourists it was an opportunity to take the train from Bath to Aix as timing of flights did not fit into the schedule. What a change, on at St Pancreas, a 30 minute change at Lille et voila, here we are in sunny but not so warm South of France.
Puryicard
Puyricard Club House
Our first competition was a melee at Puyricard, a small but delightful town just outside the main city - a 25 minute bus ride. The terrains are different from the ones we  experience at home but provide a challenge and  an opportunity to practice different skills whilst playing with our hosts.

A summary of the tour will be included in our next newsletter. For anyone who would be interested in joining the tour next year, please let me know so that I can include you in future communications.

Club Badges
Club Badge The club has invested in a number of club badges to raise funds for the club priced at £5 a badge. Once the initial investment has been re-couped the proceeds will go directly to the club.  Anyone who would like to purchase a badge should contact Diane Greenaway at bdgreenaway@btinternet.com
Remember any funds raised will be used to support the improvement of the clubs facilities. You will also be able to show your loyalty to the true City of Bath Team.
Club Mêlée

Start of the melee
Organised Chaos??.
Mêlée(pron.:/ˈml/ or /ˈmeleɪ/, French: mêlée [mɛle], the French spelling is also quite frequent in English writing), generally refers to disorganized close combat involving a group of fighters. A Mêlée

ensues when groups become locked together in combat with no regard to group tactics or fighting as an organized unit; each participant fights as an individual.

sunshine with 16 people taking part. After 4 rounds our secretary Diana Lockwood was triumphant with 15 points Chris McGinn second with 12 points and Don Grimes third with 10.The view was that we should repeat what was a really fun day. Anyone who would be interested in entering future Mêlée should contact Don directly and he will include them on future communications.
