Greetings!

 Martin Ellis

As I write the rain is starting to fall again - what a summer!  Despite what the weather has thrown at us, we have completed many competitions and matches with surprisingly few cancellations - a testament to our hardiness and commitment to play pretty much whatever the conditions!

As we approach Autumn there are a number of events that I would like to bring to your attention:

  • The End-of Season Club Dinner: It is proposed that this will be held in November - we are still in the process of selecting a venue - details to be announced at a later date.
  • Winter Doubles: These will start on October 21st and run through the Winter over 8 Sundays.
  • The Annual General Meeting which will be held on November 15th at the Harington Club.

The last of these assumes greater significance than ever as the Club Committee is now in urgent need of new members due to the recent resignations of Diana Lockwood and Mike Ferris. On behalf of all club members I would like to thank them both very much for their contributions to the club. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact me, or another committee member, for more information about what is involved.

To finish on a positive note, nine of our members recently took part in the GWR side competing at the National Inter Regional Championships at Hayling Island. A success for the Club indeed.

Warm regards,

Martin

Euro Cup Game

The club has entered the Euro Cup this year and our first match will be at home. We have been drawn against Crondell Petanque Club and have proposed that we play on one of the last two weekends of October . We are currently awaiting their response. Anyone who is interested in playing should advise Don Grimes who will be the point of contact.

New Website
Its Official, City of Bath Petanque Club has a new website. Although there are still a number of areas that have to be completed we now have news updates from the club as well as other interesting petanque stories, a calendar has been included which will include all fixtures that may be of interest to members, the league table for the Thursday night League and a guide to Petanque Pistes around the area.
Tony and Caroyln Members are invited to submit their articles for inclusion and this month Tony and Carolyn have written an article about their stay in Sospel in the South of France where they attended the villages local Boules competition and having been challenged by some Parisians, did the club proud by prevailing over the competition. Their article and pictures can be found on the news page

You can find the site at www.bathboules.co.uk

Have a look and give us your feedback, what would you like to see, read about, or even contribute.

Abbey Ales Bath Thursday Boules League

The presentation event for the 4th season of the Abbey Ales Bath Thursday Boules League took place at The Northey, Box. The league is organised by City of Bath Petanque Club, sponsored by Abbey Ales and is open to any teams of 4 based within 5 miles of the City centre.

Thursday Night Presentations

The league was disrupted by rain during the season, but was eventually completed by playing in waterproofs. The Division 1 Champions were City of Bath Bears: Don Grimes, Esperanza and Chris Isaac, Jim Canham and Mark Gilbert. The runners up were the Compton team: Clive de Silva, Phil Woodham, John Murray, Martin Britton and Adi Williams.

The Division 2 champions were Reside: Cary Bush , Ben & Natasha

Bower, Toby Martin and Georgina Barstow; and the runners up were Barnhouse: Graham Cogswell and Tim Bolt. The Reside team will be promoted to Division 1 next season.

The finals of the league doubles and plate were played before the prize giving dinner on a surprisingly sunny evening. In the main doubles competition Clive de Silva & Phil Woodham beat Graham Cogswell

& Tim Bolt. In the plate Adrian Dolan & Len West beat Fiona Starkey & Nigel Manley.

Organising committee Chair Diana Lockwood, praised the teams for their

sportsmanship and congeniality on the piste and for making the season a

pleasure despite the wet weather. Any teams interested in playing next season should contact Chris McGinn at: chris@chrismcginn.com

Shooting Competition September 8th
Ciaran In his second full season as a member of City of Bath Petanque Club, Ciaran Crabtree beat 8 other contestants from the Great Western region to win this years shooting competition narrowly beating last years winner, Clive de Silva.
Ciaran said that winning such a prestigious event has been the highlight of his career to date and that he hoped to take the skills he had acquired in the last two years and attend a coaching course in 2013 with the hope of joining the number of qualified coaches in the club.
Club Dinner
After last years successful dinner at the Devonshire Arms we have decided to make this a regular club event. The committee is currently looking at various locations as well as a suitable date. If anyone has any suggestions could they please let Don Grimes know.
