City of Bath Petanque Club Newsletter |
|
|
|
Dear (Contact First Name),
Welcome to this second edition of our new style newsletter and I would like to start off by thanking Cary Bush for his efforts in putting them together, and in such a professional style. I would also like to recognise and thank all the other club members who give up so much of their time to organise events and tours on behalf of the club - this newsletter clearly illustrates the impressive range of such activities now available to club members. Finally I would like to remind you all about the forthcoming visit by a small group from Aix and hope you will find the time to come along to one of the several opportunities over the weekend to help make them feel welcome.
Sincerely,
Martin Ellis

Visit to Guernsey
It was decided this year that prior to attending the Jersey Open in May we would visit Guernsey and explore the delights of playing in a Boulodrome. Departing early from Southampton we arrived in time for lunch (wine included) before exploring the castle at St Peters Port. In good spirits we managed to to find a taxi to take all seven of us to the Club House in the middle of the Island at what use to be an old garden centre with a large greenhouse. Although there were a number of internal competions taking place we were made to feel welcome and joined in the melee, everyone having at least 3 games each and experiencing both the Internal and external pistes. Then came the fun part of the evening, finishing around 9.30 we were advised that the first available taxi would be at 11.00 and that was not guaranteed. Luckily our hosts dived in and gave us lifts back to the hotel.
Unfortunately the Guernsey Open in September clashes with the Inter Regional Championships at Hayeling Island however or hosts advised us that they will look to change the date next year to prevent any clashes ......... so another opportunity to visit Guernsey next year.

Aix-en-Provence
Visit to Bath by Aixois boules players:
A small but very keen contingent of four petanqueurs from Aix-en-Provence will be visiting Bath for the Bath Boules weekend, 23-24 June. They are playing in the tournament in Queen Square on Saturday 23rd June, and it would be great if CoBPC members could drop by to say 'bonjour' and to cheer them on, join them for lunch or maybe to introduce them to English Pub life in the evening.
On Sunday 24th we hope to show them round Bath in the morning, then go for a pub lunch and friendly petanque match in the afternoon.
Please contact Lesley Hall (lesley-hall@hotmail.co.uk) if you can join the visitors for any of these activities, the more the merrier! You'll be contacted with all the details nearer the time.
Aix Twinning Association events:
The Club is a member of the Aix-en-Provence Twinning Association who provide us with support and welcome financial assistance for Aix related events. The next meeting will be on Monday, June 25 and Lesley Hall will represent the Club.
All Club members are welcome to Twinning events to meet other groups and individuals with an interest in all things French and particularly Aixois. Here are some in the near future which club members are encouraged to support:
*A well-known Aix choir will perform in the Abbey on July 7 at 2pm, all welcome.
*The Bastille Day dinner will be held at the White Hart on July 12 at 7.30, cost as before £16.50.
*35th Anniversary Celebration Dinner / Dance with music at BRSLI on Saturday, 22 September, cost £25/£30 tba. |
BRUNEL LEAGUE
A good finish to the first period with a win against the Pirates leaving us with 3 wins from 6 matches....not as good as we'd hoped after last season, and none of the squad playing with enough consistency. The pretty awful weather has also contributed to a few disappointing matches. Never mind - onwards and upwards - Period 2 began with a 4-3 win at Nailsea against the Stingers on Wed 13 June. Next match is home v Wheatsheaf on Sunday 17 June then Home v Gamekeeper on Sun 1st July. |
Larkhall Boules Festival
The May Bank Holiday Boules Tournament which has become part of the Annual Larkhall Festival was organised by Chris Garratt, Lesley Hall and Mike Ferris from City of Bath Petanque Club. The tournament was also sponsored for the first time by Wadworth Brewery of Devizes and thanks go to them for their generosity.
Teams, dressed in appropriate French style, gathered in Alice Park in the early English morning drizzle to register for this triples event and to compete for The Rose and Crown Trophy
A mix of players, young, old, novices as well as experienced club players, entered into the light-hearted festival spirit for the tournament.
The Bouling Vultures trod their familiar path through to the grand final where they faced another local team, the Rose and Crowners. Consistent play from the Vultures proved to be the telling factor and they secured the Rose and Crown Trophy for the 3rd year in succession together with individual unique medals made from gold painted horse shoes of the Wadworth Shire Horses.
The Rose and Crowners received the Runners Up trophy with Steve Bomber's beating Ma Cuisine into 3rd place.
All teams received a team supply of 6X beer from the sponsors and individual Wadworth key rings as medals.
The prize for best Young player of the tournament was awarded to one of the 21st Scouts troop, competing for the first time. |
