Time for a Dashboard Survey |
It's June and the calendar year is approaching its half-way mark for 2012. The S & P 500 is up ~5% for the year (pre-Memorial Day); worries continue for global growth as China and Europe face slower growth and austerity. The US job market continues to lack robust growth. Cuts to public sector spending continue and impact businesses which rely on government contracts and government funding. The Federal Reserve continues to hold a line on interest rates; and inflation remains subdued - although in the longer term inflation worries abound. There have been signs of recovery: the technology sector in the San Francisco Bay Area is robust with companies like Zynga, Shutterfly, Facebook and Apple driving jobs, real estate prices, and overall optimism in the economy in Northern California. There are times when the economy is roaring. Stock prices are going up, interest rates are staying low, unemployment is down. However, indicators can and do go opposite directions. Now, it's hard to tell from day to day where we stand. I'm optimistic that the current situation is a short-term one, and that long-term prospects are for growth and good times.
