Friends of the Library Book Sale
|
 Attention bargain hunters and book lovers! The annual spring book sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Sedona Library, is right around the corner. Preview night: Friday, April 19, 5:30 to 7 p.m. For Friends of the Library members, invited guests, staff, and volunteers. Book sale dates: April 20 through 28, during regular Library hours, plus Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. For the general public. For less than the price of a single hardcover book, you can join the Friends of the Library. To print out a membership form, click here or pick up an application at the Library.

Oscar-Winning Movies at the Library

April is Oscar month at Flicker Shack! All English-language films we're showing in April were nominees or winners in a major Oscar category this year.
Call 928-282-7714 for titles, or look for the upcoming film descriptions every week in Kudos. You can receive a monthly Flicker Shack schedule, with titles, by sending an e-mail to flickershackspl@gmail.com.
Movies start at 6 p.m. every Monday (except on holidays and during special events) in the Library's community room. No movie will be shown on April 22 because of the book sale. Admission is free!

Border Songs Benefit Concert
|
 The Library's Latino Services department invites everyone to the musical and poetry-reading event Border Songs, on Saturday, April 6, in the Si Birch Community Room at 6 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit the volunteer organization No More Deaths/No Más Muertes - a group that provides medical assistance and food to immigrants and helps recently deported people on the Mexican side of the border. Musicians and poets participating in the April 6 concert and poetry reading include Christa and Tom Agostino, Chuck Cheesman, m. henry, Robert Neustadt, Pachuco & Classik, Peter Ragan, and Christa Sadler. Admission is a voluntary suggested donation of $5 or the purchase of the Border Songs compilation album at the door. Mark your calendars and come enjoy an evening of music and poetry and a message of peace and solidarity at the Library! Jeffrey Lungé: Visions of the Southwest
|  On Sunday, April 14, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room, a presentation will be given about Sedona artist Jeffrey Lungé. This program introduces a recently completed book about the artist, an accomplished and widely recognized watercolorist. Lungé was introduced to the Southwest by his brother-in-law Edward B. (Ned) Danson, Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona at that time. Inspired by the beauty of the Colorado Plateau, Lungé moved to Sedona upon his retirement. His paintings sold out at many one-man shows in Flagstaff and Scottsdale, and are in museums and private collections across the country.
The new book, "Jeffrey Lungé: Visions of the Southwest," with text by Kelley Hays-Gilpin and Dennis Gilpin, and designed by Pamela Lungé and Loren Haury, brings together many of the best of Lungé's paintings. Jan Danson Haury, Lungé's niece, and Diane Miller will provide narration for the program. Pamela Lungé, Jeffrey's daughter, will also be present.
This book honors the memories and service of both Lungé and Danson. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book will help fund the Edward B. Danson Chair in Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

Borrowing Library E-Books Just Got Easier
|  You may have noticed recent changes to our e-book and downloadable audiobook service, OverDrive. We're still providing a great selection of over 6,000 e-books and downloadable audiobooks, and now OverDrive is easier to navigate, with more user-friendly search and checkout features.
Additionally, OverDrive apps are now available for every major mobile device, eliminating the need to download digital books onto a computer and then transfer the books over to a device. What's more, with the new OverDrive Read feature, you can read e-books in any modern web browser with one click - there are no apps or other software to download.

- Wednesday, April 3, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Si Birch Community Room: All-ages Lego group. Bring your own Legos or use ours!
- Thursday, April 4, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., Children's Room: Tiny Tales with Kelly. Drop in for a fun, interactive, skill-building music experience. Program will feature rhythms, songs, and instruments. Ages newborn to 5.
- Monday, April 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Si Birch Community Room. Movie, rated PG, for ages 10 and up. Call for movie title.

Sculpture Unveiled

 The Library has accepted the loan of a bronze statue, Apache Stronghold, as a commemorative tribute to Dr. Melvyn "Mel" Robert Copen. The statue was unveiled at a ceremony on March 23. You can view the artwork by the large window near the front entrance.
Created by renowned sculptor Clyde Ross Morgan, the statue was donated by Mel's family to honor his memory and to stand as a tribute to his legacy of helping others. Mel Copen was an educator and community leader who worked tirelessly towards the improvement of the Village of Oak Creek area. Apache Stronghold will be on display at the Library temporarily until a permanent home is found for it in the Village.

- The Northern Arizona Stitchers Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America display continues through Saturday, May 11.
- Monday, April 22: Community book discussion at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. Marcela Saldivia, Latino Services librarian at Sedona Public Library, will facilitate the discussion of "Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez," by Richard Rodriguez. The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 1:30 p.m. Pick up your loaner copy of the book at SPL-V.
