Erika Leal, former Rutgers 4-H agent, was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame on Oct. 9 for her lifetime achievements and contributions to 4-H. Honored by the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, Leal started her career with the Rutgers New Jersey 4-H Youth Development Program in 1969, and later served as Regional Agent-North and Associate Department Chair until her retirement in 1999. Read More �

New Jersey Department of Agriculture officials reported the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle that attacks and kills ash trees, is active in 14 towns in six counties. A trapping program in 82 towns over the summer and reporting from homeowners has resulted in the discovery to date of the beetle in many New Jersey towns.

Radon professionals know radon is a silent, invisible killer, but many homeowners don't think it could be a serious problem in their homes. The Eastern Regional Radon Training Center, a part of Rutgers NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education, provides training for professionals to become certified as radon measurement or mitigation service providers. Dorothy (Dot) A. Calimer, who has been a 4-H volunteer for Atlantic County for more than 46 years, was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame on October 9 for her lifetime achievements and contributions to 4-H. Honored by the Rutgers New Jersey 4-H Youth Development Program, Calimer was one of 16 people inducted during the ceremony at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Mechanisms and Concerns" was the theme of the 8th Annual Pioneers in Endocrinology Workshop held at the Cook Student Center on Sept. 16. This annual daylong workshop was sponsored by the Rutgers Endocrine Program; Department of Animal Sciences at the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences; Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension; Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition; and the New Jersey Obesity Group. Three SEBS researchers, assistant professor and extension specialist in wildlife ecology Brooke Maslo, molecular ecologist and assistant professor Malin Pinsky, and epidemiologist and associate professor Nina Fefferman received funding of more than $300,000 dollars from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate strategies to fight White-nose Syndrome, a fungal disease in bats.
