Board Focuses on Lake House
The Reston Association Board of Directors heard presentations and discussed several matters related to the new Lake House facility at its regular monthly meeting last week. Specifically, the board reviewed and/or acted on the following:
  • Monthly financial report from the CEO on expenses and revenues.
  • Cost-savings proposal to pay for renovation work overages.
  • Independent review of Lake House budget development process.
  • Member request for records regarding Lake House construction.

Swimming in Lakes Prohibited
With the Fourth of July holiday weekend here and outdoor activities on the rise, Reston Association would like to remind residents that Reston lake pictureswimming in association lakes and ponds is prohibited and potentially dangerous. RA's four lakes are designed for storm-water management and are not maintained or monitored for swimming. There are no lifeguards. Parents are reminded to discuss the hazards of lake swimming with their children. Click here to learn more about RA's lakes.

Planning to Visit the Pools?
Make your time at Reston Association's pools a pleasant and safe experience by following a few simple guidelines. To start, make sure you have a valid pool pass. Guests are required to be accompanied by a pass-holder. Additionally, appropriate swimwear is required, including pool-specific diapers for non-toilet trained children. Diapers are available for sale at our Member Services desk. Food and drinks are permitted in designated areas, but alcohol and glass containers are prohibited. The hourly 10-minute break should be used for bathroom visits, staying hydrated and applying sunscreen (if using a spray please be mindful of others who may be nearby). Proceeds to Benefit Community
Approximately $4,000 was raised last month during the 5% Day at Whole Foods in Reston. Five percent of sales was donated to Friends of Reston, Reston Association's 501c3 supporting organization. The organization funds community projects such as environmental education, habitat restoration, youth scholarships and Helping Homes.

Class and count will meet at the Walker Nature Center, 11450 Glade Drive
Adults.
 
Learn the basic identification and life cycles of our local butterflies at the Butterfly Class. Then join staff and volunteers for the annual Butterfly Count through Reston's natural areas. Meet fellow butterfly lovers, learn tips on identification and have fun while helping to collect important information on our fluttering friends. Reservations required by July 5. Butterflies flutter on multicolored wings. Some love sunny meadows. Others prefer dappled forests. Discover these creatures' amazing ability to change from caterpillars to beautiful butterflies. Make a butterfly craft, sing songs, and play a butterfly game. A summer snack will be provided.

Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are fascinating fluorescing insects. Discover what makes them glow and why they blink their lights on and off. Find out what they eat, how they grow and where they live. Learn how to attract them to your yard. Play a firefly game and take home a fun craft.

 RA's volunteer program consists of members in our community working in a variety of capacities. Volunteers are RA's strongest line of communication with the community. Each year a diverse group of RA members donates thousands of hours to the association. Through their dedication, we are able to provide a wide range of high-quality programs, services and events that make Reston a great place to Live, Work, Play and Get Involved.

Review of Tetra Buy, Renovation
Reston Association is seeking RA member volunteers to assist the Board Governance Committee in its selection of a firm to review the budgetary, administrative and governance aspects of RA's purchase, planned use, and renovation of the Lake House property (formerly known as Tetra), including the recent capital cost overruns associated with renovation of the facility.

Candidates with professional experience in  accounting, auditing, law, construction project management, governance, and internal controls are encouraged to apply.
 
Applicants should submit a r�sum� and brief letter of interest to stadele@reston.org no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, July 15. Candidates will be interviewed on Monday evening, July 18. For more information, call 703-435-6570.

If selected, volunteers will meet with the RA Board Governance Committee in July and August to review responses to RA's request for proposals and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors on firms in August.
