lakesLakes Lowered for Inspections
Reston lake picture Reston Association's annual lake inspections will start on May 10. RA's four lakes will be lowered about a foot prior to the inspections. Divers and an inspection team on the shoreline will be looking at the structural condition of the spillway, including the concrete, spillway gates and outfall pipes. The lakes will be lowered for just a few days and will be refilled naturally.

bikeracksSeeking Artful Bike Racks
The Initiative for Public Art - Reston (IPAR) and the Reston Association Multimodal Transportation Advisory Committee (MTAC) are seeking design proposals for permanent, artist-designed IPAR logooutdoor functional bike racks to be installed at specific locations throughout Reston. Winning bike rack designs will be both imaginative and functional, enhancing the community's public art collection.  The two organizations seek to develop a series of site-specific bike racks that will represent Reston's unique aesthetic, natural, and cultural identities. The goals of the project are to provide safe bike parking for cyclists throughout Reston and to weave art into the fabric of Reston's infrastructure. The deadline for entries is May 29. Read more.
ridesTransportation for Older Adults
Fairfax County is promoting an interactive online service to help older adults locate volunteer driver rides throughout the county. Click here to go to the NVrides website to use or volunteer for the service, or go to the county's website for general information about transportation for older adults and people with disabilities.
gardenGarden Plot Openings
There are a few available  garden plots open and a short wait list for the Hunters Woods, Golf Course Island and Lake Anne garden plots. The open plots are located at Cedar Ridge, next to Forest Edge Elementary School. Plots are reserved for RA members only. boatUnclaimed Boat Raffle
Reston Association recently recovered an unclaimed canoe, without an association general access permit, from Lake Audubon near Beacon Heights. If you believe the boat is yours, call 703-435-6535.

RA is holding a raffle for several boats. To enter the raffle you must be a Reston resident. Names will be randomly drawn during the week of May 16. To place your name in the drawing, please call William Peterson at 703-435-6535 or email with subject line "BOAT RAFFLE."

The festival will feature a variety of hands-on activities and entertainment. Highlights include acoustic music, live animals, craft making for kids, displays and information from environmental groups as well as fishing and canoe/kayak rentals on Lake Audubon. There will also be a native plant sale by Nature By Design. Entertainment Sponsor: Reston Community Center.

All day:  Water Safety scavenger hunt and take home activities for children.
10 a.m.-1 p.m. Swim Lesson level placement.
10 a.m.-3 p.m. Pre-season swim tests for children 8-12 who want their card punched (parent/guardian must be present).
Try the Lifeguard prerequisite swim test.
11 a.m.-2 p.m. Hands on, in-water, SCUBA demonstrations and info sessions, starting every half hour.
3 p.m. Lifeguard rescue demonstration.

The Reston Planning and Zoning Committee will be host to Fairfax County's Department of Planning and Zoning at this public meeting. On the agenda is a presentation on the county's proposed Zoning Ordinance Amendments governing the Planned Development Commercial District (PDC), Planned Residential Mixed Use District (PRM) and other provisions. The Jefferson Apartment Group, in collaboration with the Fairfax County Supervisor, Cathy Hudgins, will be holding a community meeting on the future plans for
Tall Oaks Village.
 
The developer plans to present the findings of the market study requested by the county along with the county-sponsored peer review of the market study. There will also be an updated plan for the mixed-use project based on the results of the market study.

Comstock Partners and Reston Association invite you to join more than 500 local commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. Register and meet us on the Metrorail station to receive a free T-shirt, enjoy light refreshments and be entered into a raffle for a free bicycle. This location is above Fairfax County's first secure bike parking facility, just blocks from the W&OD Trail. Help restore the Old Trail Drive natural area and remove the garlic mustard that has invaded the Snakeden Stream watershed. Spring is the best time of the year to identify garlic mustard and pull it out of the ground before it goes to seed. Please meet at the Glade Pool parking lot. There is poison ivy at this site. coveCall for Covenants Volunteers
Reston Association is seeking two volunteers to serve on the Covenants Committee. One to fill the Hunters Woods/Dogwood District seat and one to fill an At-Large seat. Both positions are for three-year terms.
 
The Covenants Committee protects the integrity of property values in Reston by administering the Use and Maintenance Covenants set forth in the Reston Deed of Dedication.
 
If you are interested in applying to be a member of the Covenants Committee, please complete the Committee Volunteer Application form by June 1, 2016 and submit it via email to stadele@reston.org.
