A sewer pipe leak occurred at the lake on Monday, July 20. It was repaired by Fairfax County by Tuesday. Testing was then done to determine bacteria levels in the water. By Friday, caution signs were removed around the lake and boating and fishing restrictions were removed.

algaeAlgae on Lake

A bluish-green substance, reported to be floating near the eastern shoreline of Lake Newport this week, is a type of algae (Cyanobacteria), said Reston Association environmental staff. The algae, which has also appeared on other Reston lakes in past years, will likely dissipate on its own over the next couple of weeks. RA advises residents to not touch the algae, as some forms of Cyanobacteria can be toxic.

Ridge Heights Pool, 11400 Ridge Heights Road.

kids tri The YMCA Fairfax County Reston and Reston Association will be holding the 5th Annual Reston Kid's Triathlon. The event is intended to be a fun opportunity for youngsters to stay active through the summer and learn about the fast-growing sport of triathlon. In keeping with the missions of the sponsoring organizations, a number of the participants will be from families who might not be able to afford the entry fee and equipment for the event. Through individual and corporate sponsors, their costs will be covered. All net proceeds from this event will be used for The Y and RA youth scholarship programs.

Volunteers receive a T-shirt, breakfast and participation in a feel-good event.

We strongly discourage parents from volunteering if your child is in the race. For more information on the event go to www.restonkidstri.org.

Volunteers are needed for many different areas and if you would like to support local kids and volunteer for this event, please sign up at: http://bit.ly/1Clc2uw.
