ponybarnPony Barn Concept Selected

The Pony Barn Working Group has formed its final conceptual plans for the renovation of the recreational area located near Steeplechase Drive and Triple Crown Road.

The plan, which was decided on at a meeting last week, calls for an improved pavilion area with amenities such as play areas, picnic tables and barbecue grills. The proposal also calls for new fencing and landscaping. A butterfly meadow is part of the plan. It will include a viewing deck. Click here for more information and to see the conceptual renderings.

The group's proposal still needs to be presented to the Design Review Board and Board of Directors. The board is tentatively scheduled to hear the group's report at a Thursday, July 30 meeting. If approved, the plan then will go to the DRB on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

pipe"Floating" Sewer Pipe to be Fixed

Fairfax County has contracted with Corman Construction, Inc., to repair some of the straps that hold down a 20-inch sewer pipeline at the West Cove area of Lake Thoreau.

Four of the seven straps that hold the pipe in place were found to be broken during a June 8 inspection of the line, causing the pipe to buckle about 18 inches near one of the manhole covers on the south side of the cove. The county found no evidence of a break or leakage into the lake.

According to the Director of Wastewater Collection for Fairfax County, Thomas J. Russsell, it could take several weeks to repair the "essentially floating" pipe. Normal use of the lake by residents should not be affected, he said. Sewer service will not be interrupted.

sidewalkPathway Work Near School

A section of the new pathway adjacent to Terraset Elementary School, and just south of the nearby underpass, will be closed on or about June 22. It will remain closed until mid-July while additional pathway and sidewalk work is done.

The Fairfax County Public Schools Design and Construction Division is in charge of the project. After the work is done, which should be sometime next year, Reston Association will check to make sure pathways that traverse the school property are in good, safe condition.
