IN THE NEWS: Updates and Announcements
|
Paddle Boarding on the Agenda
| The Reston Association Board of Directors will consider two separate requests later this month from local companies to operate stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) classes on Lake Anne and Lake Audubon. In the fall of 2014, a new Reston-based company Surf Reston, LLC approached RA about conducting SUP classes on Lake Audubon. Surf Reston has proposed two days/evenings of paddle board instruction on Lake Anne per week, and no more than three intermediate level classes per month at Lake Audubon, all to be closely scheduled with RA staff to avoid conflicts with other users and events. There will be no rental fleet of paddle boards at any Reston lake. RA has also received a request from another group interested in conducting paddle boarding classes on Lake Anne, yoga provider, SUP-Asana. This firm is currently exploring the feasibility of purchasing commercial space at Lake Anne Village Center. Throughout the discussion process, the RA board has received both support for the activity, as well as questions and concerns about the effect SUP classes might have on the lake and those who live around it and will be taking additional public comment during the regular board meeting on March 26. Members can also send their comments to member_services@reston.org.

"Re-Energize" Reaches 100
|
The Re-Energize Reston Community Challenge reached a milestone last week. One hundred residents have now received a home energy-appraisal through the non-profit organization Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP).
The challenge is being held in honor of Reston's founding year (1964). The goal is to help 1,964 homeowners to increase their home's efficiency and preserve important environmental resources.
Karen Vassar of Winterport Cluster recently won a Nest Learning Thermostat. By signing up for the one-hour checkup, the Reston resident was enrolled in the drawing for the special energy-saving thermostat.
Friends of Reston will receive a $10 donation for every home checkup. Reston Association and LEAP officials are encouraging residents to sign up for the checkup.
