The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington.  Gardeners Join Forces

As part of its civic beautification program, the Reston Garden Club joined junior members of Southgate Community Center's Garden Club this week for an after-school gardening event. The junior gardeners, pictured above, helped clear yard debris and planted new bulbs at the center.

Reston Association's Board of Directors recently approved the assessment rates and other fees. Here are the rates and installment amounts:

2014 Annual Assessment Rates
1. General Annual Rate
   $634 per/lot/unit
2. Federally or State Subsidized Unit Rate
   $624 per unit
3. Elderly Housing Rate
   $624 per unit
4. Fairfax County Tax Reduction Rate
   $285 per lot/unit

2014 Installment Plan Rates (6 payments)
1. Initial Payment (Includes $25 installment plan fee)
   $134 per lot/unit
2. Remaining 5 Installment Payments
   $105 per lot/unit

courtsTennis Courts Lighted
tennis ball All of Reston Association's hard-surface tennis courts remain open, but only Shadowood's two front courts and Lake Newport's courts will be lighted (4-9 p.m.) for the winter season. The lights will go back on at RA's other courts beginning Feb. 1. Clay courts are closed until April.
silverlineSilver Line Faces More Delays

metro logo The $5.6 billion Metrorail Silver Line project is facing another delay, according to officials at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The opening of the line was originally scheduled for late 2013. No exact timetable is currently available for when the commuter train service, which includes a Reston station, will be operational.

lightLight the Lake for a Good Cause
The Lake Thoreau Entertainment Association is inviting residents to participate in the inaugural "Lake Thoreau Festival of Winter Lights," occurring in December and first week of January.  The association would like to have as many houses, townhouse, boats and condos to light up their lake-facing side.

Donations will be given to the following projects and organizations for each condo, house and boat that lights up the night:
  • $10 to making the documentary film,
  • $10 contribution to Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith), a Reston-based non-profit organization.
