Reston Station

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington. Reston Today: January Edition 

This month's topics include camp registration, the election, tree maintenance and the Virginia Polar Dip.

Reston Today is a monthly news magazine video produced by Reston Assocation. It features stories about the association's programs and events as well as important information about various community initiatives. 


Magazine's "Best of" Survey          

Virginia Living magazine's second annual "Best of Virginia Readers' Survey" is underway. Reston residents are being encouraged to vote. The polls close on Jan. 31.

Go to www.VirginiaLiving.com/Vote to cast your ballot for your favorite mall, spa or other businesses and services. Voters will be entered into a contest to win an Apple iPad. 


Parks & Recreation Internship 

Reston Association needs an intern to provide administrative support and customer service to the Parks and Recreation Department, and assist in the planning and implementing of events.

Candidate must be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Parks & Recreation or related field. 
Position lasts from mid-January or February through mid-April (start and end dates are flexible). See the RA website for further details and application.

Bond to Speak at MLK Event          

Jan. 19-20
Various times and locations.

Reston Community Center will hold the 28th Annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. Community service will be the theme of this year's events, which will be held at RCC Hunters Woods, Southgate Community Center and Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation.

Former NAACP Chairman and founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee, Julian Bond, will be the keynote speaker on Sunday, Jan 20.

All events are free, but some require registration. Click here for more information.

Sign up your child or children for Reston Association Summer Camps. Click here to review the camp descriptions and get registration details.  


Once registration opens, you can sign up online at www.reston.org. Following these tips can ensure a successful registration:

  • Make sure you are registered on the RA website.
  • Your profile must include current contact information.      
  • Camper's info must be correct.

A deposit is required at the time of registration to hold your spot. Transportation or extended-care options must be paid in full.


You can also register in person at 12001 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston. For more information contact camp@reston.org or call 703 435-6551.


RA Camp sessions fill up fast. Waiting lists are available and RA will notify you when a space becomes available.

Polar Dip at Lake Anne

Donations have begun for the Virginia Polar Dip. The event raises money for sick children and their families to visit the Camp Sunshine retreat in Maine.

Bird nests are easy to find in the winter. Make your own bird nest craft to take home, see real bird nests up close and go in search of nests in the trees along our trails. 


Nature Game Night

$5/person RA Members, $8/person Non-members.

Bring the whole family for a game night with a nature spin. Play Nature Pictionary, Tree Twister and Forest Bingo. Then, make your own checker board out of natural and recycled materials to take home. Have popcorn and homemade snack mix while enjoying an evening full of fun and games.

GET INVOLVED: Volunteerism at Reston Association
RA's volunteer program consists of members in our community working in a variety of capacities. Volunteers are RA's strongest line of communication with the community. Each year a diverse group of RA members donate thousands of hours to the association. Through their dedication, we are able to provide a wide range of high-quality programs, services and events that make Reston a great place to Live, Work, Play and Get Involved.   


MLK Jr. Day of Service 

Saturday, Jan. 19 

9 a.m.-Noon
Southgate Community Center, 12125 Pinecrest Road.
All ages are welcome. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older.

Join us for the MLK Day of Service. Reston Association is partnering with several organizations, including Reston and Southgate Community Centers, Reston Interfaith and the Closet Inc., to conduct several service projects.
