Tourism serves as a vital economic engine in LaGrange County, especially at this time of year while the

county is gearing up for its many holiday attractions.
The Town of Shipshewana alone attracts over 2,000,000 visitors every year to experience the largest outdoor flea market in the Midwest, or to browse through the quaint retail shops and enjoy home-style Amish meals.
But tourism reaches out beyond the Town of Shipshewana. LaGrange County is a perfect home for naturalists and those who love outdoor sports. The county is home to the 11,605 acre Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area encompassing 529 acres of lakes, 17 miles of free flowing river, and diverse woodlands and camping areas. Sixty-seven natural lakes, rivers that are ideal for canoeing and kayaking, and a vibrant county and town parks system (including 2 skate-board parks) are also available so that people of all ages can find something outdoors to enjoy all year!

President's Perspective
The LCEDC has collaborated with the LaGrange County Convention and Visitor's Bureau on marketing materials to highlight the quality of life in LaGrange County. This partnership also fosters entrepreneurial support for retail and other tourism-based businesses, such as assisting two different canoe liveries and a tourist-oriented retail clothing store. We have also collaborated with Sturgis, MI in St. Joe County, and have produced marketing materials focusing on the Fawn River Crossing area. Last year, tourism and the travel industry contributed nearly $124.9 million to the LaGrange County economy. The industry created a total of 1,583 jobs, over 1/3 of which were in high wage occupations, and reached out to people from all over the Midwest as well as Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, California, New Jersey, Texas, Maine, and Nebraska just from a random sample one May day of last year. Tourism is a large economic driver in LaGrange County and we want the public, both in and outside of our community, to know that we have much to offer, not only for our targeted industry clusters, but also for tourism and quality of life. -Keith Gillenwater
