Joe vs. the Mulch Volcano

If you enjoyed reading "Mulch Ado About Nothing" in our spring 2015 Arborist Almanac newsletter, check out this excellent video from This Old House that really drives home the point.

What point? That "mulch volcanoes" hurt trees by suffocating their roots.

The clip illustrates how a certified arborist saves over-mulched trees-- or in one case, must declare the tree too far gone to save. It's an education in under four minutes that should be mandatory viewing for mulch-crazy landscapers and average Joes everywhere.

Help spread the word! Arbor Day was last month, but it's never too late to do a good deed for a tree.

Shearing is for Sheep— Not Shrubs!

We got a little wacky in our spring Arborist Almanac article "Shearing: from Sheep to Shrubs." If you haven't read it, it might give you a chuckle. But we're serious about the subject. Because if you think mulch volcanoes are a problem, check out shrub-shearing. Shearing produces a surface shell of green and a dark interior that's unhealthy, has no growth, and invites insects and disease.

Arborist Enterprises to the rescue! We know the proper season and the proper techniques for hand pruning a wide variety of shrubs— both flowering and non-flowering. With time and patience, we can restore your shell-shocked shrubs to health and beauty.

"Shawn did an excellent job, especially with cleaning out the deadwood in the lilacs-I'm sure they can "breathe" now. Can hardly wait to see the mulch job you guys do!"
