Pastoral Transition
Dear Grace,

I write to share that Kyle has been offered and accepted a position with the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church. His official title will be Ecumenical Staff Officer for Theological Development and Faith and Order in the Council of Bishop's Office of Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships.

The office has recently moved from New York City to The United Methodist Building in Washington D.C., on Capitol Hill.

This job is an opportunity for Kyle to use his gifts in theology and ministry to serve the church on a national and global level. The position will begin November 1st, at which time he will work remotely, with our family relocating to Washington D.C. in January 2017.

My time in ministry with you has been one of the highlights of my life, both personally and professionally, and it has been a joy to serve God alongside you. Kyle and I prayed together about accepting this position and believe this is where God is calling us next. However, it has been a difficult discernment process because of how much you mean to me and how much I love serving Grace. I have no doubts about where God is leading Grace next-you are faithful, passionate and open to the Spirit's movement, and great ministry is ahead.

Rev. Dana Everhart, Grace's District Superintendent, and I have met with your Church Council to share the news and begin to work together on what's next. He, our new Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson, and the cabinet have Grace's best interest at heart and will work to appoint a pastor who is the best fit for Grace, who may begin in January or June. He and the Church Council are available to you as we make this transition.

My plan will be to take an appointment in the greater D.C. area sometime over the next year. Because of my maternity leave, our situation is unusual because we don't know exactly when my last Sunday will be with you, though it will be sometime over the next month. The last Sunday I am scheduled to preach is this Sunday, September 11th, though I will be present on Sundays until I have the baby. I hope to see you on Sunday. We are working to plan a gathering in December so that we can say goodbye and officially celebrate our ministry together. So, we will have time together beyond the next month.

In the meantime, know that you are in my prayers. I have full confidence in your bright future and your next pastor is privileged to get to serve alongside you. We also welcome your prayers as we make this big transition in the midst of other transitions in our lives.

With deep love, peace and grace,

How can YOU volunteer?

As in years past, Grace UMC will host a Blessing of the Animals this fall. This year, the pet blessing and worship service will take place on Sunday, September 25th at 11am in Piedmont Park. (the entrance near 10th St. and Charles Allen Dr.) In order to make sure that we have the people power to make this event a success, we're trying something new.

We've created a sign-up form where church members can volunteer where they feel led to contribute. You can access that form here.We need to fillour necessary volunteer slots by September 1st to ensure that we'll be able to host the pet blessing. So, if you're eyeing a particular job, go for it! We look forward to worshipping with your furry and feathered friends!

Congregational Care
