Falling into Autumn: A Place at the Table

Dear Grace,

Though the temperatures are climbing into triple digits, students, teachers and staff are preparing to go back to school. Hard to believe, but fall is around the corner as area school systems start at the beginning of August. Additionally, Global Ministries staff will be moving into the property the first week of August. With so much newness in our communities and church, we are planning a fall kick-off celebration and hope you'll join us!

Fall Kick-Off Worship and Celebration
Sunday August 7th, 11am
Potluck Lunch Following Worship
Over the past few years, we've discerned that our vision together centers on food: nourishing ourselves and our community spiritually and physically. We have gifts for hospitality and feeding and find great joy and justice in the practice of eating together. Therefore, our theme for the fall, in worship, study, and mission is: A Place at the Table.

We'll kick-off this series August 7th, which will also include a blessing for all those who are part of the educational system, from pre-school to grad school. And of course, we have to kick-off our fall of food and faith by eating together! For the potluck: barbecue pulled pork, fried chicken, and drinks will be provided. Look for a sign-up sheet in Grace café where you can offer to bring sides, desserts and paper goods.

This is also the day we are kicking off choir and want YOU to sing with us. The anthem will be easy and accessible and all are welcome to join. There will be two rehearsals (You can make both or just the 7th. Please gather in the sanctuary.):
  • Sunday July 31st from 12:15pm-1pm
  • Sunday July 7th at 10:30am
Speaking of food, THANK YOU Grace for your generosity over the summer for women and children in our community. As we announced on Sunday, because of your gifts of food, money and time, we were able to provide ONE THOUSAND meals to the families who are part of the after school program-meals that they would not have otherwise received with school out of session. The impact cannot be overstated, and Ginger, the Action Ministries staff, and families send their appreciation. God is good and so is your response!

Put August 7th on your calendar, and be on the lookout for many food and faith opportunities as we move through the fall.

See you for worship on Sunday and think about who you can bring with you.

Grace and peace,

Kate

GRACE READS
Thursday, August 4th, 7pm, Starbucks on Ponce (Whole Foods Plaza)

Read and discuss thought-provoking books as we journey in faith together - every 1st Thursday at 7pm.

All are welcome; please invite others to join you at 7pm on Thursday, Aug. 4th at Starbucks in the Whole Foods Plaza; 650 Ponce de Leon Ave. at Glen Iris.

Our next book: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver.

Author Barbara Kingsolver and her family abandoned the industrial-food pipeline to live a rural life - vowing that for one year, they'd only buy food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is an enthralling narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.
