Pentecost: It's a Birthday Celebration!

Dear Grace,

This Sunday, May 15th, is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is commonly known as the "birthday" of the church. Traditionally a Jewish festival commemorating the giving of the law at Sinai, the early followers of Jesus were gathered celebrating this holiday when the Holy Spirit came upon them just as Jesus had promised:

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability. ~Acts 2:1-4

Now, Christians from all over the world celebrate Pentecost fifty days after Easter. On Sunday, we'll celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit through song, story and prayer. In order for us to get in the spirit of the Spirit, you are invited to WEAR RED on Pentecost. Red is the traditional color of the day as it celebrates the Spirit's flame of new life.

Let's deck out our sanctuary in a sea of red! Pentecost is also the "birthday" of the church. To honor Grace church, we will hear testimonies from Grace members about what the church means to them. And what's a birthday without cake? Stay after worship for a "Happy Birthday Church" party in the café. You don't want to miss this Sunday!

This week also marks the beginning of The United Methodist Church's General Conference, a once every four year gathering of United Methodists from all over the world who conference together to discern the direction of our church.

Join me in prayer for our church so that the Holy Spirit may continue to speak in the manner of Pentecost and people from around the world proclaim in many languages that love prevails.

See you for our BeltLine walk Saturday, May 14th at 9:30am and worship Sunday at 11am, decked out in RED and think about who you can bring with you!
Grace and Peace,
