Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.
~ Chief Seattle, 1855

To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being.
~ Mahatma Gandhi

The other day, I met a newborn lamb, just hours old. A simple, everyday thing, the birth of a lamb, yes? Well ~ of course ~ no. It's enough to make you weep and rejoice, to witness this ineffable mystery that takes place regularly and easily, without the need for human intervention. It's humbling, too, this realization that, for all the advances we've made in acquiring knowledge and in mastering technology, we're just another tiny, pretty much irrelevant piece of nature's grand jigsaw puzzle. Irrelevant except for our unhappy tendency to thwart nature's unfolding whenever we think we have a better (for which read, more profitable) idea.

I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.

Whenever I get to feeling queasy about what some people are doing to the earth, I firmly remind myself that countless other people, lovingly respectful of the land on which they set their feet and grateful for the food it provides, do their own little bit to set things right. We compost; we reuse, repurpose, repair, recycle; we plant lettuce and tomatoes (and nasturtiums!); we're careful to use energy wisely. If those actions seem on their face too little to matter, let's remember that even the largest ocean is nothing but a huge collection of drops of water.

There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.

Let's be responsible for our little patch of earth, walking gently and with gratitude, tending and nurturing whatever we can. Let's glory in the beauty that even disregard has not yet crushed and celebrate the abundance that survives neglect.
Each of us has the power to help heal the earth. Let's use it!
