Skinny Winnies Head North

They're called Skinny Winnies, a group of owners who are enthusiastic about compact and efficient Winnebago Industries RVs.  Most own Sprinter-based motorhomes such as the Winnebago View, View Profile and Via, the Itasca Navion, Navion iQ and Reyo, or the Era Winnebago Touring Coach.

Recently, 96 Skinny Winnie members in 52 coaches gathered for a mini (or should that be "Minnie"?) rally in Grand Marais, Minnesota.  A Q&A session with Winnebago Industries Product Planner Chris Bienert kicked the festivities off on Monday afternoon, followed the next day by an Open House for those who wanted to show off their coaches and modifications they had made to them.

Chris showcased a 2014 Winnebago Via 25P for the group.  "The Via had steady traffic throughout the session, with Skinny Winnie members very enthusiastic about the Via's interior and exterior storage, the extra sleeping space provided by the StudioLoft bed and the bright open floor plan," said Bienert.

Recipe: Flatbread Crisp Pizza Nachos

This issue's recipe is courtesy of Kellogg's new Tailgating Most Valuable Party promotion (which, we're happy to report, features a 2013 Winnebago Vista 27N as the Grand Prize).

Ingredients

  • 32 Keebler Town House Flatbread Crisps - Sea Salt & Olive Oil
  • 16 slices reduced-sodium turkey pepperoni, halved
  • 16 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • cup shredded Italian blend cheese (2 oz.)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Arrange Keebler Town House Flatbread Crisps with edges touching on foil-lined baking sheet. Top each crisp with piece of pepperoni and tomato piece. Sprinkle bell pepper and cheese over all. Lightly sprinkle basil and pepper on top. Bake at 350 F for 5 to 8 minutes or until cheese melts.  Cool slightly. Serve warm.

Dream Drive: The Million Dollar Highway

Some say it got its name because it cost a million dollars a mile when it was constructed  in 1924.  Others say the gravel it was built from -- discarded from nearby gold and silver mines -- contained literally a million dollars' worth of ore.

Regardless how its name came about, the views along Colorado's Million Dollar Highway will almost certainly make you feel like a million bucks.

This paved stretch of U.S. Highway 550 through the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado connects the towns of Silverton and Ouray (between Durango and Grand Junction), and no matter which way you look, the view is nothing short of spectacular.

Of course there are plenty of other things for RVers to do along the way.  Camping, hiking, horseback trail riding, shopping, visiting ghost towns and learning more about this unique intersection of American history, geography and geology.

Meet the 38Q

Winnebago Adventurer and Itasca Suncruiser models are known for offering the style, comfort and amenities more typically associated with high-end diesel pushers -- but without the diesel-pusher price tag.

And our flagship gas coach just keeps getting better. The newest in the Adventurer / Suncruiser family, the 38Q, is a triple slideout floorplan that delivers true zoned living for the ultimate in livability.

In the spacious lounge, the Rest Easy Extendable Sectional Sofa makes it easy to enjoy the HDTV or available fireplace, while the roomy mid-coach galley makes meal prep a snap. A large split bath sets off the luxurious master suite, which features a powered king or queen bed and its own HDTV.

Interior and exterior storage abound, while standard full-body paint ensures that the Adventurer and the Suncruiser look as beautiful on the outside as they do on the inside.  For the ultimate Class A gas coach, look no further than the new 38Q.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread (or Bread Sliced the Old-Fashioned Way, Anyway)*

Our Stitchcraft Division (which makes furniture and other soft goods for our motorhomes) has just acquired a new Flow "Mach 2" waterjet cutting machine.

The Mach 2 pumps water, pressurized up to 60,000 psi, through a hair-thin orifice to create incredible (and incredibly accurate) cutting power. Our waterjet is set up for water-only cutting, meaning that anything you can cut with a utility knife can be cut on the machine.

For added efficiency, all parts to be cut are programmed and nested using SigmaNEST, our  corporate nesting software, to make the most out of every square yard of material.

This new Mach 2 waterjet is a good example of our approach to manufacturing motorhomes: it lets us build to closer tolerances for a better product, and it improves efficiency through its speed of operation and by allowing us to be more sustainable with our materials.

*The baking industry is actually starting to use waterjet technology to slice bread! As a loaf progresses down the assembly line, multiple waterjet heads will do the slicing - - no more sharpening or contaminated knives!

We use a spin-weld process to fuse the fittings to our water tanks so they literally become part of the tank.  Others use silicone sealant to "glue" fittings on, making them more likely to leak or work loose.
