Spare-a-Pair
Gently Used Shoe Drive
While we are working to help our school through collecting pledges and walking at our St. John Paul II Catholic School Walk-a-Thon, we also want to take this time to help others.

We are all fortunate to have shoes to walk in at our Walk-a-Thon, but we know that there are others less fortunate.  So, we are collecting gently used shoes, sandals, and flip flops to send to Haiti.

If you can "Spare a Pair" (or more), please send them into your child's classroom the week of September 7th.

On Friday, September 11th, we will need help gathering the boxes of shoes and transporting them off campus.  Please let us know if you are available to help.  Thanks!

Volunteers Needed
We are all looking forward to our annual Walk-a-Thon on Friday, September 11.  The students will be treated to a pizza lunch from Dominos.  We will need volunteers starting at about 10:45 a.m. to help serve pizza, clean up and deliver the pizzas to Silver Creek Park to the 5th & 6th grade.  If you can help please call the school office. pizza-banner.jpg

OUR CAFETERIA PROGRAM IS GROWING!

It's safe to say that the Honeymoon Period is over and our students and adults are still very much in love with our Hot Lunch Program. We are beginning our third year of preparing hot lunches at St. John Paul II Catholic School, and the lunches continue to get rave reviews. We are serving an average of 176 lunches per day.

Although our lunches are delicious, the secret ingredient to the program's success lies in the people that prepare and serve the lunches each day. Lisa Combs, our Food Service Director, along with Cathy Thomas, Elizabeth Hunter, and Connie Henderzahs, encourage healthy eating habits and make every child feel welcome each day!

The success of the program has allowed for many upgrades to our cafeteria. The latest is a walk-in freezer. This larger freezer allows us to receive larger deliveries of frozen products which often are more appealing to the children. (No comparison between frozen peas and canned!) The freezer also helps to ensure food safety.

We would like to give a special thanks to Chad Balmer, and Climatec for his help overseeing this project! We couldn't have done it without him!

Grade 2
Mrs. Naville's class learned a lot about deserts last week in reading.  They focused on brief reports in writing, and wrote a brief report about the desert during group work time.

Mrs. Amy Wheatley came in for Art time with Mrs. Naville's class.  The students made rainbows out of fruit loops and cotton balls.  So cute!

Grade 5
Mrs. Meyer's 5th grade class has started reading the novel Number the Stars.  This novel is about a Danish family trying to help a Jewish family during the Holocaust.  As part of this unit, the students were reading nonfiction articles to learn about the Jewish New Year, Hidden Children, and the Star of David.  They also worked together to discuss how those topics connected to our own Catholic faith.

Grade 3
The third graders have been studying symbols of the Catholic Church. They enjoyed a tour of the church to look at these symbols.
