News & Events

Picture of the Week

A "Mystery Reader" in Mrs. Cannington's third grade class generously gave each child a copy of The Giving Tree. This was perfect timing with Arbor Day right around the corner!

Swimming Starts in PE

In PE, students will begin the swimming unit on Monday, April 27. Please have your child bring in a swimsuit, towel, and goggles as needed to school each day. Students will be in the pool for PE Monday through Thursday each week for the rest of the year, barring any inclement weather. Students will be participating in fitness related activities outside of the pool every Friday. Please ask your child to apply sunscreen, if needed, before arriving to PE. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact the PE teachers.

Summer Learning

What is "summer loss"? The research is clear that children who don't practice literacy and math skills over the summer can lose up to three months of progress and that loss can have a cumulative, long-term effect. At JCDS, we are excited about our comprehensive summer learning program, which was designed by a committee of 12 JCDS teachers and administrators.

Please note that summer learning folders will be sent home with students in grades 1-5 on Thursday, May 21. These folders will include summer reading logs, Languagenut Spanish practice information, and writing journals. Students in grades 2-5 who have been enrolled at JCDS for 2015-2016 by April 22 will also receive Singapore Math workbooks that will be charged to their families' accounts. Students who have not enrolled by April 22 will receive information about how to purchase summer math books online.

JCDS Spirit Team

The JCDS Spirit Team competed in Youth Dance at the Cheersport Grand Championship held downtown at the Prime Osbourne Convention Center where they received a score of 76.5 out of 80 for their pom routine... and they took home first place in their division! This is extremely exciting for these girls as they have been practicing for this one competition all school year. "I was very impressed at the sportsmanship our girls and parents showed during the entire competition. They were kind and definitely showed 'teamwork' the whole weekend," dance director Emily Gray said. Click here for a video of the moment they won.
