Summer Learning
Students entering grades 1-6 are asked to complete math, reading, and writing lessons over the summer. Summer learning folders with all of the information were sent home with students yesterday (May 29). These activities are required. In addition, exciting optional Science Olympiad experiments are available for children entering grades 3-6. Click here for more information or to view/download the materials.
JCDS Team Ellie
The rescheduled First Coast Kids Triathlon is this weekend (June 1 and 2) at Jacksonville University. Please remind all JCDS Team Ellie triathletes to wear their green shirts on Saturday and Sunday. Please also have your triathlete place the "E" tattoo on their left shoulder or calf. The team will have a tent under one of the registration tents. Look for the banner Sunday morning. Anyone can bring a tent to put up around the tent as well.
Summer Learning on Facebook
In conjunction with the summer learning program, we want to see students actively learning over the summer. Please email pictures of students reading, writing in journals, and working on math problems or science experiments - preferably in unique locations such as on an airplane, at a national park sign, in a foreign country, at the beach or on a mountain - to inyquist@jcds.com. The pictures will be posted to our Facebook page and shared with the entire school at the summer learning celebration in September.
Medication
If your child has medication in the main office, please pick it up by noon tomorrow, May 31.

Art Class
In art class recently, fifth graders learned about how the Impressionist painters were fascinated with the play of sunlight on water, trees, and the sky.
The fourth graders are now studying birds of prey in science with Mrs. Jones. In art they are studying how to create brushstrokes that mimic the many textures found on birds. They have learned how to draw the many different types of birds of prey. The finished paintings will be done on black paper with white paint.
Also, the third graders have studied Asia and have created clay kimono figures. Clay slabs were used to construct the figures and newly purchased clay extruders were used to create the hair or bun. Underglazes were then applied and when the final firing is completed, each will be adorned with a small parasol.
Click here for pictures of the art work.
Computer Lab
Below is an example of an iMovie that third graders made in computer lab. They did the research in class and in science, and then did the writing. Then they made iMovies. Everything from the title, the intro clip, the maps, music, and voiceovers were done by the children. Ms. Sanchez is very proud of them!

AmberJax News
Congratulations to all of our swimmers who competed in this weekend's Midnight Madness LCM home swim meet. It was so rewarding watching our little swimmers turn in some very big performances in events that make seasoned swimmers tremble. Several of our young swimmers competed in "Open" categories because the events weren't offered for their age group. To see our swimmers now, and look back to the fall, the difference is really amazing. They have become not only proficient swimmers in all the strokes, starts, and turns, but seasoned competitors and athletes as well. The hard work and discipline that the sport requires will serve them well into the future, and on behalf of the entire coaching staff, we want to thank them and their parents for trusting us, for supporting us, and for challenging us to be our best.
This Friday swim practice will be at our usual 3:30 p.m. time because of the 5th grade party. School is a half day, but practice isn't early. Next Monday, June 3, we begin our morning swim practice schedule. All groups will practice every day (even Wednsday for Garnets) and the times are as follows: Silver 7:15-8:45 a.m., Bronze 7:30-8:45 a.m., and Garnet 7:45-8:45 a.m. JCDS summer camps start promptly at 9:00 a.m. The first River City meet of the season will be today, May 30. If you haven't signed up for this, please do so. If you are leaving for the summer, have a wonderful vacation and we look forward to seeing you again in the fall. Thanks to everyone for a successful year.
