BookaPaLooZa: The World Tour

Next week's book fair tour is packed with exciting things! The doors open early and the first 25 moms who make a purchase each day will receive a "green" bag in honor of Mother's Day. The Kelly Fine Arts Center will be filled with grade level books, required summer reading books, students' top picks, parents' and teachers' best sellers, Patsy Smith Roberts books and many more. You may pre-order her books by clicking here. Ms. Roberts will share her stories and her adventures on both days.

Make sure you check your Thursday Folder for the class book fair schedule so you can shop with your child. Offsite at Barnes and Noble, St. Johns Town Center, rock on with our very own Jazzy J's who will be entertaining the crowd with their Orff instruments - April 30 (Tuesday) at 6:00 p.m. Missing the tour? You can still take part by shopping at bn.com. Remember to use voucher no. 11057981 anytime you shop to ensure a portion of your purchases goes to the JCDS library. Show your enthusiasm for your library and come to the book fair. Have your reading list handy and be ready to go around the world with our books! The BookaPalooza World Tour is on April 30, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and May 1, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Third Grade Field Trip

On Wednesday, May 1, the third grade will attend the showing of "The Last Reef" at the IMAX Theatre at World Golf Hall of Fame. This exciting show will culminate our science unit of animal habitats and food chains. We will enjoy lunch after the show and return to school at approximately 12:30 p.m. Please do not send in a lunch for your third grader on that day.

Voices of Distinction

Sixth graders will be performing in the annual Voices of Distinction program on May 15 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a reception to follow. The program is directed by Diane Wellman and will take place in the Fine Arts Center.

JCDS Basketball Camp With Coach Warren

Jacksonville University's men's basketball coach Cliff Warren will be running a basketball camp at JCDS this summer. The camp will run from June 17-21 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The cost is $150. Please register via Veracross or contact Drew Upchurch for more information.

Reminders

Out With The Old, In With The New!

Tomorrow is the last chance to donate used books you no longer want, and make room for new books you will purchase at our annual book fair, to the Parents' Association's book drive. Tomorrow, parents will be collecting your used books (chapter books, picture books, activity, or work books) at the yellow, blue and green drop off circles from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. All books collected will be matched with readers-in-need by Books-A-Go-Go.

4th Grade Bake Sale

The fourth grade will hold a bake sale tomorrow as their service learning project for the year. It will be held during both lunch periods and everything will be $0.50! Fourth graders are raising money so that they can buy items, which the students will choose, to donate to the Humane Society.

Basketball Conditioning Camp

JCDS is offering a new after school basketball conditioning camp. The camp will focus on skill acquisition and development as well as basketball conditioning. The camp will run from April 22 through May 23 meeting every Monday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The camp will be held in the Smith Center and run by the JCDS basketball staff. Please contact

Drew Upchurch to sign up or if you have any questions.

Green Team

The JCDS Green Team has been invited by the Second Harvest Food Bank to participate in a service project this weekend. The event is called CANstruction. It is being held at the Jacksonville Landing from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Students will build a model of a Ford Truck out of cans of food, which will then be donated to Second Harvest. All Green Team members should meet Mrs. Johnson at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the Landing front doors.

AmberJax News

Thanks to all the parents who volunteered and helped with our recent JCDS ping-pong meet. Congrats to all our participants as well. These fast, fun meets have nothing to do with actual ping-pong. They are simply named after the ping-pong balls that were originally used to determine 1st-6th places. Now we use rubber ducks, but the name has stuck.

This month's recipient of the coveted AmberJax "Gold Cap" is Raymond W. Raymond is on his third year with the AmberJax, and has progressed into quite an athlete, participating not only in swimming, but triathlons as well. Raymond is always cheerful and fun at practice, but a fierce competitor off the blocks. He was pleased and a little surprised with the honor, but it is well deserved.

This weekend brings a home swim meet to our Episcopal High location. We have one more month of afternoon practices, and then in June, we switch to mornings. Thanks!

- Coaches Kitzi, Sonny, and Katrina
