PRCI Leads the Pipeline Industry R&D at IPC 2012

Through its staff and member company contributions, PRCI played a leading role in promoting the importance and value of pipeline research and technology development at the 2012 International Pipeline Conference (IPC), held September 24-28, 2012, in Calgary, Alberta. The IPC provides one of the best venues in the pipeline industry for the dissemination and deployment of PRCI's research findings and results, with hundreds of technical sessions on a wide range of topics related to pipeline design/construction, operation and safety. PRCI made a substantial effort to support and participate at the 2012 IPC,

Mark Piazza, Director of Pipeline Programs for PRCI

with virtually all of the technical tracks

and the panel sessions including participation by representatives of PRCI staff and Technical Committee members. A large number of the technical papers published for the 2012 IPC were based on results derived from PRCI-funded research. In addition, the content of a number of the IPC tutorial sessions included substantial references to PRCI research findings and reports. (read full story)

At the 2012 International Pipeline Conference (IPC) in Calgary, PRCI member ROSEN hosted a Battle of the Arts in which local artists competed head-to-head creating paintings. The artists were given themes related to the IPC and the pipeline industry including Corrosion, In-line Inspection, Pipeline, Alberta, and Collaboration. All of the paintings were later auctioned off at a reception hosted by ROSEN and all proceeds supported the Young Pipeliners Association of Canada. PRCI is proud to support the association and purchased four of the paintings, one of which, "Intelligent Pig," was painted by the Battle of the Arts winner, Amy Dryer.

PHMSA Releases Research Announcement for Pipeline Safety Projects and Consolidated Programs
As follow-up to the July 2012 Joint Industry-Government Pipeline Research Forum, PHMSA has released a Research Announcement that identifies 20 separate topics that are being considered for government R&D funding (DTPH56-13-RA-000001). Through the Research Announcement, PHMSA is requesting White Papers to define research projects and/or consolidated programs to address each of the topics. The topics are focused on the same key areas that were addressed in the July 2012 R&D Forum, including: 1) Threat Prevention; 2) Leak Detection and Mitigation; 3) Anomaly Detection and Characterization; 4) Anomaly Repair and Remediation; and 5) Design, Materials, Welding-joining, and Valves. The Research Announcement indicates that PHMSA expects to provide up to $10 million of funding to support the projects and programs identified as being responsive to theannouncement. Please click here to review the Research Announcement in its entirety. (read full story)
Preparations Underway for the 7th Annual Research Exchange Meeting

PRCI has initiated preparations for the 7th Annual PRCI Research Exchange Meeting, which will be held February 5-7, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. The Research Exchange Meeting is scheduled each year to provide PRCI member companies, our key research partners, and external stakeholders with a report on the important research results and outcomes for completed and select ongoing research projects and programs in the last year. The meeting will include several days of technical sessions where the results of PRCI-funded R&D projects and programs are presented to the attendees. Key technical programs addressed at the 2013 Research Exchange Meeting will include Management of Stress Corrosion Cracking, Coatings and Cathodic Protection, Mechanical Damage Inspection and Assessment, In-Line Inspection, NDE Technology, Leak Detection, Damage Prevention, Structural Integrity Assessment Methods, and Vintage Pipelines. Welcoming New Members to PRCI

PRCI is pleased to announce that Sasol Gas Limited has joined as a Pipeline Operating Member of PRCI.

Kinder MorganIn August 2012, we welcomed Sasol Gas Limited as a member of PRCI. The Sasol Gas business markets both natural and methane rich gas, which are transported via a pipeline network to the end users. Sasol Gas operates and maintains a gas supply network through 2,500 km of pipeline, including the 865 km cross-border pipeline linking the gas fields in Mozambique to the Sasol Gas network in South Africa. We would like to welcome General Manager of Operations, Johan Fourie, who will represent Sasol on the Board of Directors.

New PRCI Project Manager - Gary Holt

PRCI has hired additional project management capabilities to support the growing Operations & Integrity program. Gary Holt comes to PRCI from Eagle Rock Energy, where he served as Director of Technical Services for that rapidly growing midstream gathering & processing company. Gary has extensive experience "in the ditch," with pipeline integrity regulatory interaction and compliance, and with pipeline construction projects. He is currently focused on establishing the procedures, protocols and supporting infrastructure for the PRCI Pipe Repository in Houston, and will be supporting various O&I Committee projects. Gary is based in Houston where he can provide day-to-day oversight and support at the Repository.
