A Prayer As We Seek Our Next Rector

O Lord of infinite grace, we come to you in confidence and hope.  As we week our next rector, we ask that you grant us the gifts of openness, mindfulness and gratefulness.

Openness, that our eyes may see your work, our ears may hear your voice, and our minds and hearts may fill with the boundless possibilities you place before us.

Mindfulness, that we may be aware of your presence, alert to your will, and sensitive to the needs of our leaders and all members of our community.

Gratefulness that we may give thanks for what has been, what is, and what is yet to come.

Help us to find a rector who will join us in our mission to be instruments of peace, and lead us in new ways of bearing witness to the love of God for all people.  We ask this, in the name of Jesus Christ, with humble gratitude for the many blessings you have bestowed upon our community.

A Message From The Interim Minister

 ALL THINGS

"We know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to God's purpose."

                 (Romans 8:28)

Forty-nine years of marriage and forty-five years of parish ministry have been grounded in this wisdom of St. Paul. The truth is that sometimes the hardest truth to hold on to is the word "ALL." Along with the good and beautiful events in our life also come the difficult ones. In challenging times it is hard to keep the faith and to confess that "all" things work together for good. Often, as you know, it is only later on, after reflection, that we can see clearly. We learn again, as Leonard Cohen puts it, that: "there is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."

As Karin and I begin our Interim ministry with you, we trust that this ministry is also a part of all things working together for good. Already, we feel embraced by your generosity and support. As we pray for you, so we ask for your prayers for us. May we listen and see who you are and where you want to go. Trusting the Holy Spirit to lead us, we will walk together and learn once again how blessed we are to "know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to God's purpose." Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

-- Randy Wilburn & Karin

On the weekend of October 5th and 6th we will celebrate our Patronal Feast

Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist and Commissioning of Confirmands

Sunday at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist

Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Blessing of the Animals in the Memorial Garden.

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.

Stewardship at St. Francis

This fall at St. Francis our stewardship theme will be "Flourish in Faith."  You will see this theme used in worship beginning the weekend of October 5/6 through Commitment Weekend, November 9/10, when we have the ingathering of pledge cards.  Each week during this time there will be an insert in your bulletin with a reflection on the theme and a short talk by a member of the St. Francis community about how our stewardship supports the way we live out our faith locally and globally.  Be on the lookout in your email and regular mail (for those without email) for communications from the Associate Rector, the Senior Warden, and the Stewardship Team on how you can join the St. Francis community as we flourish in faith!

Annual Church Mouse Fair

9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon

Opportunities for everyone!

Attic Treasures ~ Glassware, Pictures, Linens, Craft supplies, Tools, Books, CD's, DVD's, Puzzles, Toys, Plants and Miscellaneous
Donations of good, clean usable items needed. (Please note that we cannot accept tires, paint, cribs, infant car seats or carriers, furniture, television sets, computers, encyclopedias, textbooks, or subscription magazines.)

Drop Off Times for the above items: October 13  after the 10:00 a.m. service until 1:00 p.m.

October 14 - 18 - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Baked Goods ~ This is another best seller at our fair. So, if you're able to donate pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, you'll be creating many happy faces. In particular, we would like to encourage items in half sizes or smaller portions for the benefit of senior citizens who would enjoy some homemade goods without the necessity of eating a whole cake on their own. We are also looking for gluten free baked goods.

Please mark your items accordingly. i.e. with nuts, without nuts, gluten free, etc.

Drop Off Time Friday, October 18 - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Heavy Lifters ~ Your help is truly needed on October 13 after the 10:00 a.m. service to move tables and chairs for set up and then on October 19 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. to take down same and load up the leftover unsold items into trucks

Truck Drivers ~ At least two pick up trucks with drivers are needed to take leftovers to Savers in Lincoln Plaza in Worcester when the fair is over. We often have several boxes of books and miscellaneous items which won't all fit in cars easily.

Sorters ~ During the week before the fair, even an hour of your time would be so much appreciated. All are welcome to bring friends with you! For high school students who need service hours this coming fall, this is a terrific opportunity to fill that need and also help us to help others! Sign up sheets will be coming to a table in the Narthex near you soon!

Crafters ~ We've been crafting away during the summer and welcome all donations, ideas, and people who would like to join us on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon as we create special items. It's fun and a great way to meet others. If you've been working on items at home or would like to do so or would like to suggest another day/night for gathering, just let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Online Book Study on

Free: Spending Your Time and Money on What Matters Most

This fall the Associate Rector will be leading a book study on Free: Spending Your Time and Money on What Matters Most by Mark Scandrette.  The book will help us to explore our values and purpose in life and how we can better align how we live our lives with what the things we care about most.   Recognizing that a big part of the struggle to live out our values in all our lives is a busy schedule, we will be experimenting with meeting virtually for our discussions to allow for flexibility in participation.  We will meet online for 8 sessions beginning the week of October 27 and ending the week of December 15.  A reflection on the week's reading will be posted online at the beginning of each week by the Associate Rector and participants will be able to respond and participate at their convenience throughout the week.

Paper copies of the book may be obtained at church for $10.00 or via Barnes and Noble or Amazon and e-reader copies for your Kindle or  Nook are available at their respective websites.

Please register on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.  If you have questions or want more information contact the Associate Rector, Karen Safstrom (karen.safstrom@gmail.com).

Profile Committee Update

The Profile Committee's mission is to write an up-to-date, accurate and honest profile of St. Francis, of who we are today.  The Profile will be used to communicate who we are to clergy who may feel called to serve as our next rector.

Thanks to Ed Farrell, the Transition Ministry Officer for the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, and the Rev. Pamela J. Mott, Canon to the Ordinary, for facilitating the recent listening events. And thanks to everyone who participated. Your input is much appreciated!

Special thanks also go out to Marcia Galvinhill, Jacqueline Galvinhill and Cassie Clemente for babysitting after the 10 a.m. service.

We will post the color-coded index cards from the listening event in the church soon, so you can read what others had to say to these questions:
  • What are the two best aspects of life at St. Francis?
  • If you could change just two aspects of life at St. Francis, what would those two be and why?
  • If you had to leave St. Francis for five years, what would you hope to see here when you return that isn't here now?
Blank cards will be available, so you can add to the ongoing conversation. (Or email your responses to Cynthia at McIntyre.c@comcast.net)

We are also working with HolyCow! Consulting on a congregation-wide questionnaire. Information and a link to the survey will be sent in a separate email next week. (Paper copies will also be available.) This Church Assessment Tool (CAT) will help us gauge the strength, vitality, and trends at St. Francis and will be used as input for our Profile.

Our goal is 100% participation! Your input is critical. Thank you in advance for your participation.
