A Message from the Associate Rector

Karen Safstrom In his book Giving to God: The Bible's Good News about Living a Generous Life Mark Allan Powell shares the story of the Gauls. The Gauls were a warlike people, Druidic by religion, who in ancient times inhabited the area of what is now France and Belgium. By the Christian era they had been conquered by the Roman Empire though they continued to rebel and rise up against their Roman occupiers.

Christian missionaries eventually made their way into Gallic territory and were able to convert many Gauls to Christianity. However, the story goes that when a converted Gallic warrior was baptized in a river or stream he would hold one arm high in the air as the missionary dunked him under the water. At first the missionaries thought this odd and couldn't figure out why the Gauls did it. It all became clear however as when the next battle broke out the baptized Gallic warrior would exclaim, "This arm is not baptized!", grab his weapon, and head off to destroy his enemy.

Powell points out that the story, while most likely not historically accurate, offers a vivid image of what someone would do in order "to keep one part of their body, one aspect of their identity, free from the influence of baptism." (pg. xii) He goes on to comment that he thinks for us today the one area of our lives that most of us would like to keep dry and clear of influence of the baptismal waters is our money. He envisions that we might like to claim, "My wallet is not baptized!" and so spend our money in ways where God isn't involved in our financial decision-making processes.

I would argue that for many of us he is right. I don't necessarily think that we make a conscious decision to do that, but I think whether we realize it or not, money has power over us. Just watch television, pick up a magazine, or drive by a billboard today and you can see all the competing influences for how we spend our money. We are told what car, house, clothes, phone, and coffee we need in order to happy. We are constantly receiving messages about how we need to spend our money in order to find fulfillment and more often than not we allow those influences to take priority in how we use our money, leaving God to an afterthought.

My own experience with the power of money happened when I graduated from college and got my first job. I sat down at the kitchen table to work out a budget to figure out where my money would be going. At one point my father stopped by the table and when he reviewed my budget he asked, "Where is your giving to the church in here? I don't see that you have included that in your budget and it needs to be in here." I pushed back at my father and told him that I would be giving to church, but I just wasn't including it in my budget plan. I would see what I could give later, after I'd figured out all the other places where my money would be going.

Looking back on it now I can see that I was doing what Mark Allan Powell talks about in that story about the Gauls. I was trying to hold my wallet above the baptismal waters and exclude God from my financial life. But my father wouldn't let me. He was there to challenge me to include God as a priority in my financial life because he knew that God's involvement there was just as important as God's involvement in all the other aspects of my life. It took a while for me to get there, but eventually I made God and the mission of the church one of the first things I committed to in my financial budget instead of giving to God from what was left-over after I spent on everything else.

Throughout the gospels Jesus calls us all to learn this same lesson through his teaching and preaching on money. In fact, he focused on money so much that the only other thing he talked about more than money was the Kingdom of God. Why? Because he knew the power that money and possessions have over us. And he knew that by inviting God into our financial lives we would be set free from the power that money has over us. He knew that by making God a priority in our spending, instead of money having power over us we would be set free to use money in a way that reflects the power of God's love and grace in our lives.

This November as we make a financial commitment to the mission and ministry of St. Francis Church for the coming year, this is what we are being asked to do. We are being asked to reveal how we are set free in Christ so that every aspect of our lives, even our finances, reflects the power of God's love and grace at work in us as individuals and a community gathered around the cross. And it's a way that we reveal that we are a people who live completely wet from the baptismal waters, a people whose entire lives, including our wallets, speak to God's redeeming and transforming power in Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

Karen

Diocesan Convention 2012  From the Delegates to Diocesan Convention:

Rich Simpson, Karen Safstrom, Dawn Rooke, Dick Delorme, Kathleen O'Connor, and Jacqueline Galvinhill

Nationally and in the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, we are in a state of transition.  All of us are excited, however, about the steps being taken toward becoming a more mission-focused church.

We worshipped together at the Cathedral in a very moving Eucharist concelebrated by Bishop Scruton and Bishop-elect Fisher. Bishop Scruton gave his last convention address  as our bishop, and challenged us to move forward into the next phase of our life together as followers of Christ in this Diocese. He specifically addressed how our Diocese has remained healthy and respectful of one another in our differences, and in particular regarding the blessing of same-sex marriages authorized at the General Convention. We left the cathedral with a palpable unity in our admiration and appreciation for the blessing we have had in his leadership and confidence in our future with our next bishop, who also addressed the Convention on Friday night. In his address, Doug challenged us to live the Christian life with "reckless abandon" -not worried about failing, but about giving it all we have.

One of the highlights of the convention was the presentation of the 2013 Diocesan Ministry Plan (aka Budget).  There were many factors which contributed to the excellent condition of the ministry plan next year, and the good news is that parishes will directly benefit from this.

Funding for Congregational Development Grants has more than doubled, allowing for opportunities to explore new ministries, "green" our buildings, update our communications, and more.  There is greater funding in the area of Christian formation which will provide, among other things, programming and retreats for all ages.

Perhaps the best news for parishes is that we will see a decrease in our property and liability insurance premiums due to a switch in insurers and, better yet, a decrease in our assessments to the diocese.  Parishes are being challenged to use these savings to explore "new ways to reach out to the world and our neighbors." The Vestry at St. Francis will take up this challenge in November as work on our own 2013 plan for Mission and Ministry unfolds.

Policies for the Protection of Children and Youth

The Episcopal Church has developed policies for the protection of children and youth. All church employees and anyone who volunteers to work with children and youth must attend a "Safe Church" training every three years. As a result, some important procedures and building-based solutions have been developed for use at St. Francis. All of our teachers have been informed of these procedures, but it is essential for parents to be familiar with them as well. Please take a minute to look over the list below.

Church School policies and procedures

  • St. Francis Church does background checks on all employees and any volunteers who regularly work with children or youth.
  • We strive to have two adults (or one adult and one High School student - confirmation class or older) in each classroom at all times.
  • Windows have been installed in all adjoining doors for increased visibility across rooms.
  • Children are not allowed to leave their classrooms by themselves. If a child who attends Church School in the main building (vs. St. Clare House) needs to use the restroom, a teacher or assistant will accompany them. An usher or nursery care provider will also be asked to stand with them in the hallway so there will be two adults available.

What parents can do to help

  • Please check to see if your child needs to use the restroom before they go to class.
  • Please accompany your child to their classroom and make sure two adults (or an adult and HS student) are available before you leave.
  • If only one adult is present, please stay in the room until a second person arrives.
  • Parents should accompany children if they need to use the restrooms during the worship service.
  • Children should not be upstairs in the classrooms after church (during coffee hour).
  • Children should be reminded that it is important to walk (not run!) in the building, especially when around older adults or anyone who is holding hot coffee.
  • Children should not be outdoors without proper adult supervision.

These guidelines should help insure that our children are properly supervised at all times. Thank you for doing your part to make sure our children are always safe!

The Ordination of the Ninth Bishop of Western Mass

Bishop's Ordination

Calling All Choirs!

All choirs in Western Massachusetts are invited to be part of the massed Diocesan Choir to provide musical leadership at the Consecration of our new Bishop. The two anthems for the service were chosen to be of use within a broad range of choir sizes and parishes. They are both in the public domain, which means that choir directors can print as many copies as they need for no cost whatsoever. Please e-mail the director of music, John Hooker (revdrhooker@tampabay.rr.com). He will send you links to the music. Area rehearsals will be scheduled after we have a clearer picture of the numbers involved; the main thing is to get your singers committed to being present on Saturday, December 1, at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield.

Have You Had Enough?

Our society sends us constant messages that we just don't have enough. We are told repeatedly that we need to possess more and more in order to be happy. Unfortunately, for too many of us, what we end up finding is that no matter how much we obtain it never seems to be enough and we always end up feeling like something is still missing. If this sounds familiar, you are invited to join the associate rector for a discussion of Adam Hamilton's Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity on Wednesday, November 7th at 7:30 p.m. in the library. The book is a quick read at around 100 pages and our discussion will focus on the struggle to live a life of faith which embraces contentment and generosity in a consumer culture. Click here to order it online.  Sign up on the table in the Narthex or contact Karen (karen.safstrom@gmail.com) by October 24.

Join the Conspiracy this Advent!

Do you feel as if consumerism has stolen the real meaning of Christmas?  Each year do you feel less Christmas spirit by the time December 25th rolls around because you are overwhelmed by the commercialism of the holiday?  On December 26th do you feel burned out and empty as you look around your house at the piles of shredded wrapping paper and gifts you really don't need?  If so, consider joining the Associate Rector on Sunday afternoons at 4:00pm in St. Clare House during the 4 weeks of Advent (December 2, 9, 16, and 23) as we discuss the Advent Conspiracy (www.adventconspiracy.org), a movement to designed to help us slow down and experience  a Christmas focused on Jesus with less stress, less debt, and more joy.   Each week of Advent we will discuss and reflect upon one of the four countercultural concepts of the Advent Conspiracy - worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all.  And we will consider how we can support one another in an endeavor to substitute consumption with compassion in our celebration of Christ's birth.  Sign up in the Narthex or contact Karen directly (karen.safstrom@gmail.com).

Election Day Eucharist

Tuesday, November 6 at
7:00 p.m.

On November 6, 2012, Election Day, we will exercise our right to choose.

Some of us will choose to vote for Barack Obama.
Some of us will choose to vote for Mitt Romney.
Some of us will choose to vote for another candidate.
Some of us will choose not to vote.

During the day of November 6, 2012, we will make different choices for different reasons, hoping for different results.

But that evening while our nation turns its attention to the outcome of the presidential election, let's again choose differently. But this time, let's do it together. Let's meet at the same table, with the same host, to remember the same things.

We will join a broad cross-section of ecumenical communities across the nation at the Table. Check out this website at for Election Day Communion www.electiondaycommunion.org

Organ Dedication

Sunday, November 25th

4:00 p.m.

Robert Barney Robert Barney, Director of Music for Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, Massachusetts since 1994, will be leading us in this dedication service.  Among other things, Mr. Barney will be playing Bach's Concerto in G, Mendelssohn's Sonata I, and pieces by Gustav Merkel.

Since the organ has been paid for, with some money leftover for an Organ Fund, the vestry unanimously voted that we will give away the Offering that will be taken at this service to support the ministry of Dianne and Tom Wilson with the Church in El Salvador. As they shared with the parish last month (audio of sermon from Oct 13), they will be working for Bishop Martin for the next three years. As missionaries, they will be supported by our national church, our diocese, and by us, their home parish.

The vestry felt that this designation of the offering is a way for us to be show our gratitude for the lovely organ that we have received, and to be instruments of peace in the wider world. If you are not able to be present for the organ dedication but still wish to support the work that Tom and Dianne will be doing, you can send a check payable to St. Francis with El Salvador Mission on the memo line and we will include it with the evening's offering.

Vestry Nominations for 2013

Three members of the vestry will be rotating off from service this coming year, and so we are looking to fill three 3-year appointments to vestry. If you know of someone who is a leader, a good listener, and able to serve in this capacity, please consider nominating them for service. They must be a confirmed member of the parish and a contributing member of record to do so.

If you would like to nominate someone you can email Karen in the church office, stfran@verizon.net with the name of the person you are nominating along with answers to the two following questions:

1. Why are you nominating this person for parish leadership?

2. What gifts and vision would they bring to this ministry?

Nomination sheets are also available on the table in the narthex. Deadline for nominations is Sunday, November 25th.

Vestry Discernment Night is Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the church.

 CROP Walk 2012

CROP Walk was a great success this year! So many parishioners helped make things work: bread bakers, refreshment servers, walkers, donors...and together we rose to the opportunity to help feed the hungry. Last year we raised approximately $1300, this year our fundraising goal was $1500 - we actually raised $1725!  Many thanks to everyone.

Even though we've completed the walk, CWS/CROP will continue to accept donations. If you would like to donate please click here.

One final note: the youth groups of St. Francis and Immanuel Lutheran had a challenge to see which group could have more teens do CROP Walk, and St. Francis won!  Stay tuned...they will have a similar challenge when they do 30 Hour Famine in the Spring, this time they will see who raises the most donations.

PS4FS (Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers)

The 12th Annual Prayer Shawl Ministry Gathering is Saturday, November 3rd at St Patrick-St Anthony Church, Hartford, CT. I really urge you to attend this meeting. Another chance for you to say farewell to Rebecca Scruton. The last chance for her to lead this worthwhile gathering.

A shocking statistic."There have been 36 troops killed so far by Afghan troops turning on American trainers."  Please pray for this madness to stop.

Together we make a HUGE difference. Eleven MA families have lost a loved one.

Hats for Troops

This is the time that we start gearing up for huge mailings for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are also thinking of a special mailing at the beginning of January. As many of our troops tell us there is a let down after the rush of the holiday season.
