Special Olympics - A Perspective

by Br.Nick Bolyard

In the rain, in the snow, in the sleet, or in the heat, the athletes of Special Olympics did not disappoint! Despite the rain this year, there were many competitive athletes, that prided themselves on finishing the race, no matter what place they finished. As many of you know, we are very active on Friday in the Opening Ceremonies. However, did you know that there's a Masonic tent that brothers are there to pass out refreshments on Saturday and Sunday?

Brethren, I have worked at this tent  for many years now, and I can tell you that each year I get a brand new perspective on athletics, and get many heartwarming memories with the Olympians. Beginning at around 7:30 AM, we will make coffee and get the lemonade, water, crackers, cookies, and of course, the wonderful homemade cookies ready for the Olympians. Our tent provides a place of shade in the heat, covering in the rain, music provided by Tom Thornton on his harmonica, and a great place for fellowship.

I can tell you from personal experience that working each year is my favorite memory of  Special Olympics. I encourage brethren to assist our Local Committee in the tent in future years. This is an amazing experience that I know many of you would enjoy doing!

MM Degree Conferred

at Historical Setting

Square and Compasses
TRIANGLE #748 & L. B. TURNER #732 CONFER MM AT OHIO VILLAGE LODGE #10.

The brethren of Triangle Lodge #748 and Luther B. Turner #732 met at the historical Ohio Village Lodge #10 to confer work on a candidate from Turner Lodge assisted by brethren from Reynoldsburg Lodge #340 and Grove City Lodge #689. The morning started off meeting for a hearty breakfast at a restaurant near the Ohio Village and not only were appetites satisfied, but brotherhood was shared with stories and laughter.

The brethren then assembled in the old Ohio Village Lodge complete with items from the 1800s period (air conditioning excepted). WB Gubanc, Master of Triangle Lodge called the brethren to order. With the dispensation read and the introductions of MWB Charles K. Neff, PGM of the Grand Lodge of Ohio and RWB Glenn Stoots, District Deputy Grand Master of the 14th District, the Master Mason Degree was presented.

The Lecture was given with the aid of the wall hanging just as in the 1800s period. The newly raised Brother enjoyed the work and added that he appreciated all the brethren for coming to help.

This is a great way to bring interest to your membership by holding degree work or conducting a meeting at the Ohio Village Lodge. Contact your District Deputy for further information.

State DeMolay Holds Conclave
DeMolay Logo

The State Council of Ohio DeMolay met for their Annual Conclave held at Kent State University July 23rd - 25th. Members from the chapters in Ohio gathered at the KSU Kiva Center for the Legion of Honor Conferral. This is the highest honor that the DeMolay Supreme Council can bestow on a Sr. DeMolay (a former DeMolay who has attained the age of 21), or a Master Councilor. This honor was presented in a very impressive ceremony conducted by RWB Tim Strawn, an Active Member of the Supreme Council, and Past State Master Councilor of Ohio DeMolay. He was assisted by many other Sr. DeMolays from around Ohio.

State Master Councilor, A. J. Thomas called the State Council to order on Friday evening following the Legion of Honor. He welcomed the many Masonic dignitaries who presented comments. Among those comments, recipients of the Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star and Ohio DeMolay Scholarship programs were announced, received checks and posed for photos.

One of the highlights was when MWB Steven Cokonougher, Grand Master of Masons spoke of the continued support of the Grand Lodge of Ohio to Ohio DeMolay and the other youth organizations, Job's Daughters and Rainbow for Girls. He also shared that he has been an advisor on the Linden Chapter Advisory Council for nearly 20 years.

The installation of officers was held on Saturday, July 25th. Taking the helm of Ohio DeMolay this next term is Greg Fyffe of Ralph H. McMillan Chapter in Xenia as he was installed as State Master Councilor. Other State elected officers include; Eric Lovingsheimer of Ralph H. McMillan Chapter as Deputy State Master Councilor, and Brandon Mullen of Medina Chapter who serves at State Scribe.

One of the first activities of the new term is to hold an Initiation for new members at the Cincinnati Masonic Center at 317 E. 5th St., Cincinnati, on August 23rd in the morning and then head over to Great American Ballpark to watch the Cincinnati Reds vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks. Information and the flyer can be found at www.ohiodemolay.org

During the Installation, RWB Martin Woodworth, Executive Officer of Ohio DeMolay (the representative of DeMolay Grand Master), thanked WB Ken Scott, PM of New England Lodge #4, and Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star for his service as he retired as District Governor of the 4th DeMolay District. He has served DeMolay in Central Ohio for the past 5 years. We extend our sincere appreciation to WB Scott for his service and dedication!

RWB Woodworth then announced the new District Governor of the 4th District is RWB Brian Bolyard, PDDGM of the 14th Masonic District and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Valley of Columbus, Scottish Rite. RWB Bolyard has also served on the Linden DeMolay Chapter as Advisory Council Chairman. He was welcomed in this new position and we wish him the best.

On the local level, CONGRATULATIONS to Adam Moshier of Groveport Chapter and Jonathon Parsons of Linden Chapter for being honored to receive the Degree of Chevalier. They were selected among their respective chapter members, nominated and elected to receive this honor at the recent DeMolay Supreme Council Session held in June in Orlando, FL . It is for "distinguished DeMolay service" and is awarded to Active and Sr. DeMolays.
