Dayton National Cemetery

by RWB Jeff Rannebarger

The month of May signifies tributes to our Mother's, National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Month, and Memorial Day to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

It is the later that I would like to share for this issue. I like to think I'm pretty knowledgeable about things, but I learned something new this past month. Many of us are familiar with Arlington National Cemetery near the Nation's Capitol. However, I recently visited the Dayton National Cemetery here in Ohio.

I attended a funeral of a former Korean War Veteran who passed in March and for Marine, Army and Navy Veterans who had services in April. I met with a brother Past Master who asked if I would like to accompany him as he transported the deceased to Dayton. We met at the funeral home and he brought out the flag draped coffin. We reverently placed the coffin in the hearse and left for Dayton. Neither he or I knew the deceased nor his family and as far as we knew, he was not a Mason (which didn't make a difference).

We traveled southwest of the downtown area of the City of Dayton and arrived at the Dayton National Cemetery on W. Third St. This was something I'd not read before in History classes, or in the associated books. Not until I arrived was I aware of this National Cemetery.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law legislation authorizing the establishment of national cemeteries. The Dayton National Cemetery was established in 1867 and serves an estimated 170,000 veterans in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky and is situated on 116 acres. Over 1000 burials are conducted each year and the Dayton National Cemetery maintains Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery on Sullivant Ave., in Columbus. There are close to 50,000 veterans buried in Dayton National Cemetery. The first interment was in September 1867 of a Civil War veteran. There are five Medal of Honor recipients (three from the Civil War, and one each from the Spanish-American War and the Battle of Little Big Horn). Also interned are two Major League Baseball players, General Marsena Patrick - U. S. Army, one British Commonwealth war grave of a Canadian Army Corporal, and the remains of soldiers serving in from the Revolutionary War to present day. It is only one of 14 cemeteries to be designated as a national shrine.

We met the escort and proceeded with the family to the Committal Shelter where the caskets were treated with the customary dignity. Two Army Soldiers then proceeded to fold the flag and the Sergeant presented it to family. After this, veterans of a local VFW Post rendered the 21 gun salute and a bugler played "Taps". The Chaplain gave a nice service and the family was treated in a very dignified manner.

As in two instances where there were no family members to attend services, the Ohio Patriot Guard Riders formed an escort to the Committal Shelter accompanied by Blue Star Mothers who accepted flags and in turn donated the flags back to the cemetery where they will fly on appropriate days such as Memorial Day along the Avenue of Flags.

As the escort concluded the service, she explained that this veteran would be moved to the specific gravesite and that he would be laid to rest among the other veterans.

As we drove out of the Cemetery, I reflected on a previous visit to Arlington National Cemetery and also how thankful the family was for the treatment their father and grandfather received at his final resting place.

If you are like myself and have not known about this particular cemetery, I encourage you to make the trip. I know I will return and am very proud to have been asked to accompany this soldier and to pay tribute to him.

Thank you to ALL of our Veterans for their faithful service to protect the freedoms we all sometimes take for granted!

Grove City Lodge EA

Held in Historic Venue

WM Bill Bell called the officers, members and visitors of Grove City Lodge #689 to order for a Special Meeting. It was held for the purpose of initiating an Entered Apprentice in a historic site.

Over 20 brethren gathered in the Old New England Lodge #4 building on Monday, April 13th, 2015 for what was the last time that degree work would be performed by a Lodge (other than New England Lodge #4). Many photos were taken by those attending to record this event. Both the old Historic Building and the current New England Lodge Building that housed the Grand Lodge of Ohio offices for 50 years has been sold and will be reconstructed into housing.

The EA Lecture visual aide used was the chart hanging near the JW Station, just as it would have been during the 1800's period. WM Bell thanked the members of New England Lodge and host WB Crowell Shane, PM and Secretary of New England Lodge for the privilege of being able to confer the degree in this most impressive and meaningful location!
