14th District "Blue Pages"
| The 14th District Masonic Blue Pages is in need of advertisers! This is a very good way to share a business, service, or another fraternal organization. It's been stated recently that many brethren feel more comfortable dealing with a brother of the Fraternity. Thre have been times when looking for a specific project or business where referring to a resouce like this can help rather than just looking online or checking in the phone book. NOTICE - The INSIDE COVERS, BOTH FRONT AND BACK HAVE BEEN SOLD ALONG WITH THE BACK COVER. Ads can be sold for the remaining pages. Please contact RWB Jeff Rannebarger, Chairman of the Blue Pages Committee at jrannebarger@earthlink.net about submitting an ad for the Blue Pages or also your current Jr. Warden who is the Lodge representative. The deadline for submitting ads is the end of this month, January 31st. |

Grand Master's Class Scheduled | MWB Norman Mick, Grand Master of Masons has announced that a Grand Master's Class will be held on April 5th, 2014. The location will be determined and announced by the February E-News. This Class will be a District Wide One Day Class rather than a regional class. The edicts pertaining to the GM Class have been announced and Edict #1 explains that a petitioner may be 18 years of age when the petition is received as long as the candidate is 19 years old on April 5th. The 2nd Edict permits Lodges to hold special meetings for the purpose of balloting on candidates (primarily for Lodges that meet once a month). MWB Mick has also stated this class is to have one Mentor per candidate. The petition deadline to Grand Lodge is March 15th. This gives brethren, three months from now to get petitions in, potential candidates to be investigated and voted on as there will be NO extension for petitions to be turned in per the Grand Secretary. The fees for the degrees need to be paid to the respective Lodge when the petition is received. The Lodge will also be absorbing the cost of the candidates lunch on the 5th as NO candidate should pay for his lunch that day. As a reference to help Lodges prepare for this GM Class, the Grand Lodge Membership Committee has issued a GM Class Manual which can be found at www.freemason.com/images/forms/gm-class-handbook.pdf . This information will aid in not only preparing the potential member as to what he will be gaining by his membership but also will help the Master Craftsman (mentor) in making sure his experience is worth returning back to his Lodge! In addition to the GM Class, MWB Mick has chosen to have, if the candidate is interested in continuing as a York Rite Mason that the Royal Arch Mason Mark Master Degree be presented at the conclusion of the Master Mason Degree. Petitions for Chapter of Royal Arch Masons need to be processed by the individual RAM Chapters. Mentor and candidate lunch costs are to be forwarded to the 14th District Secretary, RWB Brian Bolyard and the deadline for lunch reservations an costs is March 22nd. More information as to cost for lunch, location of the GM Class and other particulars will be presented as is learned. Don't wait until the last moment to contact potential members! Start now talking to those men that you feel would benefit membership in Freemasonry. When talking with potential members, be sure to explain that the benefits of membership as well as one main responsibility in that they will be paying dues to maintain their membership unless they should select to become and endowed member. Contact should be made to brethren who have been waiting to complete their degrees. |

COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION! |
The new Masonic year has started with annual meetings having been held and elections and installations of officers of the Lodges in the 14th District. It's now time to get the information out to the members of your Lodge so they can participate and know what's going on in their Lodge. One way to keep the brethren informed is to COMMUNICATE by calling, sending a note / newsletter and posting information the Website for your Lodge and if your Lodge does not have a website, and you wonder why your attendance isn't as you like, consider the above title, COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION!
For the Lodges that don't communicate with their members, that's a disappointment to them and to you. An occasional call to a brother, can give them the sense that their dues are being used for more than just "paying the utilities" and checking on a widow can let her know that she's being thought of and there may be some way that the Lodge can assist her. Even a newsletter to let them know what activities are happening in the Lodge can help increase attendance. Some brethren during the winter time are uncomfortable driving after dark, but if there's a function like a breakfast or a special event being done in the daytime, they might be able to attend if they are aware of the activity.
In looking at the District Website, and going to the Web Links, it's been discovered that nothing has changed with one Lodge's web site in at least two years. Another Lodge shows that their web site "Page Not Found". These may be reasons that the Lodge's attendance is not like it was or could be. If the brethren don't see that anything has changed, they may not feel the need to continue their membership. So is the Brother at fault or is the Lodge? Maybe both can / should share some of the responsibility but the effort should be made to let them know the events and activities of the Lodge.
There has got to be someone in your Lodge that can update the information, at least updating the new officers and a calendar for the 2013-2014 term. It does take some time and effort but, it's owed to the brethren to know the events of THIER Lodge! Even a note when with proposed activities during dues season can help get the information out. What are you doing to help communicate to the rest of your Brethren? |
District Inspection Schedule - 2014 | The Inspection Schedule for 2014 has been released. Most of the inspections are with dinner at 6:15 p.m. and Lodge opens at 7:00 p.m. The complete schedule was included in last months E-News and can be found on the District Website. Inspections held in January include the following; Blendon - 1/20 - 7:00 p.m. - EA Magnolia - 1/21 - 7:00 p.m. - MM Community - 1/28 - 7:00 p.m. - EA Arts & Sciences - 1/30 - 7:00 p.m. - EA |
Grand Master's Reception | The date for the 14th District Grand Master's Reception is planned for Saturday, March 8th at the Villa Milano Restaurant, 1630 Schrock Road. The doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for Social Hour and the dinner will begin after introductions of Grand Lodge Officers at 6:15 p.m. All reservations are to go through your Lodge Secretary. The cost is $38.00 per person until February 15th. After that date, from the 16th until the 28th, the cost is $45.00 per person and the deadline for ALL reservations is February 28th. |
Grand Lodge Scholarship | One important item Freemasonry promotes as a fraternity is that we are striving for education which is one component to help Brothers to become better men. Also on that theory, the Grand Lodge has established the Scholarship Foundation to help young people attain a college education. For the past few years the 14th District has presented two scholarships from applications submitted to the Grand Lodge Scholarship Committee from among high school seniors residing in the 14th District (Franklin and Delaware Counties). This year, the 14th District is very pleased to announce that THREE Scholarships are being granted. Those applying are contacted directly by the Grand Lodge Scholarship Committee and amount awarded is $1,200.00. The most important part of this process is submitting the application which is not difficult to complete, but if it isn't done, then the chance of receiving the Scholarship is impossible! It's that simple! The link to the application and information about the Scholarship is http://freemason.com/scholarship-foundation . The application needs to be submitted to RWB Jeff Rannebarger, the 14th District Grand Lodge Scholarship contact by March 1st. If there are questions, please contact him at jrannebarger@earthlink.net . |

Grove City Lodge plans Shooting Event
by SW Bill Bell
|
It was a crisp fall afternoon on October 27th when six brethren of Grove City Lodge #689 met at Hidden Haven Shooting Preserve located in Sugar Grove, OH. The beautiful palette of changing autumn leaves was a picturesque backdrop as these men set out to ensure every small orange disc that came into view met it's demise. For the next two hours, the cool air was filled by howls of laughter and cheering as both experienced and new shooters enjoyed an afternoon of "golf...with a shotgun!"
Sporting clays is a variation of skeet/trap shooting where shooters traverse a course set up with different stations of clay pigeon launchers. A round typically consists of 50 or 100 rounds per person. Each station presents a new challenge for the shooter as clay pigeons can come from any direction. Some are launched from behind while others can be thrown directly overhead or roll on the ground simulating small game animals.
Hidden Haven Shooting Preserve is operated by WB Jeff and Jody Milligan. The shooters from Grove City Lodge were fortunate to have WB Milligan (PM of Bremen Lodge #608 in the 13th District) escort them around the property, share tips and pointers and take part in the comradery and hilarity often present amongst the brethren!
Plans are currently in progress for the spring of 2014 in which Grove City Lodge hopes to have brothers, family and friends join them for a district wide day of clay shooting. If you are interested in attending the event, and would like to be included in an email list for updates, please send an email to Br. SW Bill Bell at william.mane@gmail.com .
