Brother John Quigley Passes

Masonic Funeral Emblem

Brother John W. Quigley, a 42  year member of Linden Lodge #637 and Honorary Past President of the 14th District passed to the Celestial Lodge  Saturday morning, September 28th, two days past his 95th birthday. Brother Quigley had been hospitalized a couple of times over the summer and passed at his home.

He was a very active member of the Fraternity and held perfect attendance at the 26 District Inspections for the past 4 years. He most recently participated in the Grand Master's Class on May 11th presenting the Fellow Craft Charge. Last year at the Madison County Dinner the brethren, ladies and guests attending sang "Happy Birthday" to him and he was very appreciate of the gesture. He participated in the various activities of the Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine.

He enjoyed visiting with the residents of the Senior Living Center he resided in at Trillium Crossing never locking his apartment door. He reflected the true meaning of the Brotherhood of Freemasonry and there are many that are very proud to have called him "Brother".

His daughter Connie spent many hours traveling with her father to several Masonic and Scottish Rite Dinners and he was very proud to share the picture of his great grandchildren with those who came to visit with him. It won't be the same not seeing him in his corner chair near the Lodge room door during inspections.

The viewing will be from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1st at Schoedinger Funeral Home at 6699 N. High St. Worthington, with Masonic Service following the viewing. If you plan to attend the Masonic Service, please bring a white apron. Per his wishes, the Masonic Funeral Service will be conducted by RWB Steve Cokonougher, PM of Linden Lodge and Sr. Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Ohio. His obituary notice is listed at the following link: http://www.schoedinger.com/obituaries/John-Quigley/#!/Obituary

"Well done good and faithful servant! Enter Thou in to the joy of Thy Lord!"

WB Kenneth Sparks Passes
Masonic Funeral Emblem

WB Kenneth (Ken) L. Sparks, age 85, of New England Lodge #4 passed to the Celestial Lodge on Saturday morning September 28th at the Laurels of Norworth.

WB Sparks a Past Master of New England in 1966 and again in 2000 and was a long time Secretary until his health caused him to retire.

He was an active brother in the York Rite bodies of Horace W. Wright #226, R. A. M., York Council #115, R. & S. M., and Mt. Vernon Commandery #1, K. T., and the Valley of Columbus, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite earning the Meritorious Service He was a vital "behind the scenes" brother working in the make up room making sure that each brother was ready to go on stage looking like the character they were portraying. Whether it was to take the shine off with some powder, or to add more spirit gum to keep a beard, goatee or what ever facial hair was needed to stay in place or even to make sure that the hair color was as per the character's part, Brother Sparks made sure that each person that he tended was prepared to go on stage.

As a Noble of the Past Master's Unit of Aladdin Shrine, he also gave the same meticulous care to the brethren that portrayed the Second Section of the Master Mason Degree to help lend authenticity to the characters in that important degree!

In keeping with WB Spark's wishes, New England Lodge #4 will conduct the Masonic Funeral Service at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 3rd at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home at 515 N. High St. Worthington. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the Masonic Service. His complete obituary can be viewed at: http://rutherfordfuneralhomes.com/book-of-memories/1678467/Sparks-Kenneth/obituary.php

14th District Golf Open

Saturday, September 14th was a beautiful day for the second annual 14th District Golf Open held at York Golf Club. Lunch started the day. Despite the begining of the High Street / I-270 reconstruction that has caused the York Golf Club to re-configure some holes the day was just fantastic weather for golf.

After registering 8 teams, lunch was served and all headed to the tees to get started. Each hole was sponsored by a Lodge or business and we appreciate those sponsorships.

As the day concluded all headed to the

Clubhouse, where several others joined the golfers for a very nice steak dinner and fellowship. Door prizes were awarded and the winners of the open were announced.

For the second year in a row, the Brethren of South Gate - Potter Lodge won and were received trophies their choice of a round of golf at York Golf Club. The Brethren were RWB Glenn Stoots, WB Jeff Carter, Brother Matt Knight and Brother Dan Mason.

The 2nd place team consisted of WB Tim Wheeland of University Lodge, WB Greg Brewer of Capital City Lodge, Steve Sisko and Chris Spring and they each received umbrellas and a ticket to the Ohio State / Florida A&M football game.

The 3rd place team was represented by Brother Bob Boyer of Magnolia Lodge, RWB George Miller of Hiram Lodge , Scott and John Workman and they were awarded remote controlled helicopters.

Individual competition winners included Longest drive on hole #7 - Dan Miller of Luther B. Turner Lodge, Closest to the Pin on hole #16 - Dan Mason of South Gate - Potter Lodge and Longest Putt on hole #18 - Tim Ward of Capital City Lodge. A separate Putting contest was held and RWB Stoots of South Gate - Potter Lodge won that particular event and won a golf bag.

Congratulations to the Winners and discussion is being planned for a date change for next year's Open!

14th District "Blue Pages"

Faith Hope Charity
The 14th District is bringing back the Masonic Blue Pages that was discontinued a few years back.

This is a very good way to share a business, service, or another fraternal organization. It's been stated recently that many brethren feel more comfortable dealing with a brother of the Fraternity. Thre have been times when looking for a specific project or business where referring to a resouce like this can help rather than just looking online or checking in the phone book.

Please contact RWB Jeff Rannebarger, Chairman of the Blue Pages Committee  about submitting an ad for the Blue Pages. The current Sr. Deacon / incoming Jr. Warden is the Lodge representative to this committee.

York Golf Club Membership

by RWB Ebby Brewer

Many golfers know that York Golf Club is owned by three Masonic Lodges in the 14th District, York #563, University #631 and Capital City #656. They also know it is one of Central Ohio's golfing jewels.

Designed by George Sargent, it opened in 1927 and while it has had many changes over the years it still retains that old course charm placing a premium on shot accuracy and course management.

And you may know that its first golf pro was Denny Shute, winner of the 1933 British Open and first back to back winner of the PGA in 1936 and 1937. A feat not equaled until 1999 and 2000 by some guy named Tiger.

But did you know that several years ago York Golf Club created a membership category allowing golfers who belong to Lodges of the 14th District to join? At a price lower than that for non- Masonic golfers and their families, it is without doubt the best deal in Central Ohio.

Check the website at www.yorkgolfclubonline.com for more information about York Golf Club. If you are already interested in joining York Golf Club call either Chuck Dahn, Club Manager at 614-885-5968 or Glenn Johnson, Head Pro at 614-885-5459 for details. Or ask about hosting your party or reception at York overlooking the course.
