To Honor Those Who Provide our Freedom while Remembering September 11th Victims

The following email was received after the below organization contacted the Grand Secretary's Office, and passed on to our Lodges in the 14th District for consideration - Editor

In 2009, the US Congress designated September 11the "National Day of Service and Remembrance." Each year, millions of Americans honor this designation by taking time to serve their communities in tribute and gratitude to victims, survivors, and Americans who responded and continue to respond to the attacks on our nation. I am sure you will be doing the same.

For many years, HandsOn Central Ohio has been a leader in coordinating opportunities for people to engage in service tributes throughout Greater Columbus. We invite the Brothers of The Grand Lodge of Ohio, Free & Accepted Masons 14th Masonic District to serve with us, this year, by donating to our efforts to mobilize care packages for our men and women in uniform, who are still engaged in an ongoing fight for our freedoms, overseas.

On September 9, 2013 we will serve as a collection site for care package and monetary donations to honor this annual day of service. A list of the items needed to complete a single care package accompanies this letter. Each care package costs $50.00 to purchase, assemble, and ship. Your donations will help ensure Central Ohio's gift to our troops is as meaningful as their service to our country. Please consider participating in this care package drive, by dropping off your donations at our office on Monday, September 9th.

14th District Directory "One Line Signer"
Faith Hope Charity
With many of the Lodges  returning from the summer break, the officers of the 14th District Masonic Officers Association are planning for the 2014 District Directory that is published each year. Each Lodge's officers along with meeting nights, Distrct Deputies, District Education Officers, District Officers information along with inspection dates, and other important information is included in this publication.

The Lodges of the District help keep the Directory being distributed at no cost by their members submitting their name on the "One Line Signer" form for each Lodge at $5.00 per line. Advertising will not be included in the Directory this year as the "Masonic Blue Pages" is being brought back, so only Fraternal information will be included in the 2014 Directory.

The form was passed out to those attending the Warden's meeting on August 10th. If your Lodge was not represented at that that meeting or you need additional forms, they can be obtained at the Distrct Website -http://www.14thmasonicdistrict.org/lodge/92-8-28-2013 to download and the deadline to the District Officers is October 31st.

14th District "Blue Pages"

Faith Hope Charity
The 14th District is bringing back the "Blue Pages" that was discontinued a few years back. Ads that were previously in the District Directory will be in the Masonic Blue Pages and the Blue Pages are going to be distributed to all Lodges in the District to benefit the members better.

This is a very good way to share a business, service, or another fraternal organization. It's been stated recently that many brethren feel more comfortable dealing with a brother of the Fraternity. There have been times when looking for a specific business when referring to a resouce like this can help rather than just looking online or checking in the phone book.

Please contact RWB Jeff Rannebarger, Chairman of the Blue Pages Committee  about submitting an ad for the Blue Pages. The current Sr. Deacon / incoming Jr. Warden is your Lodge's representative to this committee. More information is to follow, but if you know someone who you feel could benefit from advertising their company or service, please pass this on to RWB Rannebarger.

State Budget Passes / Fraternal Relief Bill Signed
Square and Compasses
The General Assembly of the Ohio State Legislature has passed the current state budget and it has been signed in to law by the Governor. This included a bill that brings much needed financial relief to the Lodges in Ohio.

This new law has removed the property tax of the Lodges in Ohio along with several other organizations. This in turn will return monies of our brethren paying their dues back to the Lodges and help with their budgets.

This is not, however an automatic process. Paperwork in the form of filing an application and paying the years taxes will have to be completed before your Lodge can benefit.

HOWEVER - The Grand Secretary, MWB Watson has asked to please delay the filing of any paperwork until the Lodges have been contacted by the Grand Secretary's Office. There is communication from the Grand Secretary's Office to each of the 88 County Auditor's Offices as to how each County Auditor's Office wants to process these applications, so PLEASE REFRAIN APPLYING UNTIL THE GRAND SECRETARY NOTIFIES THE LODGES!

Grand Lodge Communication
Grand Lodg Seal
The Grand Secretary's Office has mailed the information about the Grand Lodge Communication to the respective Lodge Secretaries. The Annual Communication will be held on October 18th and 19th, 2013 at the John S. Knight Center at 77 E. Mill St., Akron 44308. Please check with your Lodge Secretary for information and please make your lodging and meal reservations soon as last year the rooms sold out very fast.

The Hospitality Room of the 14th District will be held at the Sheraton Suites Hotel at 1989 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, 44221.

District Deputy Grand Master Installation Dates
Grand Lodg Seal
The dates for the District Deputy Grand Master Installations for the 14th District have been scheduled. The 1st Installation date is Friday, October 25th and the 2nd is Tuesday, October 29th. The location of each and the time will be sent out when available.

Please make a note of these dates and all brethren are welcomed to attend. Masters and Wardens should plan to be in attendance to welcome these new distinguished Masons.

Lodge Installation Dates
Faith Hope Charity
We would like to publish the Installation date of your Lodge in the November District Newsletter so that the Brethren of the 14th District are aware and therefore may be able to attend. This can help increase attendance at the Installation if people know about it.

Please send the Lodge name, date, and time of the installation to RWB Jeff Rannebarger - jrannebarger@earthlink.net as soon as you know that date so we can try to list all the Lodges dates in the November Newsletter. Please indicate if it will be an open installation (ladies and non-Masonic guests are invited), or if it will be closed to just Masons. The information will be needed by October 25th for the November Newsletter.

Benefits of Membership

Square and Compasses

There are times when a brother expresses "What is the benefit I get out of my membership in being a Freemason?," Sometimes we hear, "What's my dues go for other than being able to attend meetings?"

One of those benefits is taken from the Grand Lodge Website, www.freemason.com -

"Grand Lodge Verizon Discount Program" - The Grand Lodge of Ohio and Verizon Wireless are renegotiating the contract for the member discount program.

Unrelated to this effort, Verizon has sent emails and postcards to all individuals enrolled in "employee discount programs."  This was not limited to just the Grand Lodge program.

The Grand Lodge program is unique in that it is the only one to offer the "employee discount" to members of a fraternal order/civic association.  The Grand Lodge will contact subscribers, who provide their contact information, as soon as the final details are worked out.  Final resolution will be communicated here, or you may contact Chad Simpson, 800-292-6092.

There is a Prescription Drug Discount Card for those that do not have coverage to help reduce the ever growing costs of medicines. Other benefits include rental car and hotel discounts, discount on auto insurance and discount on paint and supplies. These are just some of the financial benefits of membership. For more information, please go to the Grand Lodge website, www.freemason.com and go the bottom of the home page under resources and explore the "Member Benefits".

RWB Brewer to Lead Valley of Columbus
Valley of Columbus AASR
RWB Elbridge (Ebby) H. Brewer has been named as successor to MWB Jim Deyo as the new Active of the Valley of Columbus, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. The announcement came from Sovereign Grand Commander John W. McNaughton of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction during the recent Supreme Council Session in Washinton DC. MWB Deyo has attained Active Emeritus status and we thank him for his many years not only as an Active member of Supreme Council but also during his time as Deputy for Ohio.

RWB Brewer is a Sr. DeMolay of Aladdin Chapter, a Past Master of Capital City Lodge #656 and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 14th Masonic District.

We wish him the best of success as he leads the Valley of Columbus!

CCW Advanced Class

With the CCW Class completed, the question has been posed if there is interest in forming an advanced CCW Class. If there is enough interest, this could be presented to the members, family and friends of the 14th District.

RWB Elam is heading this proposal so if you are a holder of a CCW Permit and would be interested in an advanced class, please contact RWB Elam at 614-871-3338 or at neilandsheila@aol.com (corrected email address) and please let him know soon so he can contact the instructor and schedule a date. The instructor has just finished writing an advanced course and is willing to present it for those intersted.

York Golf Club Membership

by RWB Ebby Brewer

Many golfers know that York Golf Club is owned by three Masonic Lodges in the 14th District, York #563, University #631 and Capital City #656. They also know it is one of Central Ohio's golfing jewels.

Designed by George Sargent, it opened in 1927 and while it has had many changes over the years it still retains that old course charm placing a premium on shot accuracy and course management.

And you may know that its first golf pro was Denny Shute, winner of the 1933 British Open and first back to back winner of the PGA in 1936 and 1937. A feat not equaled until 1999 and 2000 by some guy named Tiger.

But did you know that several years ago York Golf Club created a membership category allowing golfers who belong to Lodges of the 14th District to join? At a price lower than that for non- Masonic golfers and their families, it is without doubt the best deal in Central Ohio.

Check the website at www.yorkgolfclubonline.com for more information about York Golf Club. If you are already interested in joining York Golf Club call either Chuck Dahn, Club Manager at 614-885-5968 or Glenn Johnson, Head Pro at 614-885-5459 for details. Or ask about hosting your party or reception at York overlooking the course.

Tri Lodge St. John's Feast set for 2014

Reynoldsburg, Sunrise & Triangle Lodges plan a Table Lodge for 2014

In anticipation of the 2014 Masonic year, the current Senior Wardens of Reynoldsburg Lodge #340, Sunrise Lodge #783 and Triangle Lodge #748 plan to hold a traditional Table Lodge at The Ohio Village, a recreated 1860's village located on the Ohio Historical Society property.  The 101st Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Brother William Batchelder, has graciously accepted an invitation to serve as the key Masonic Speaker for the event which will celebrate the Feast of St. John the Baptist on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Current plans are to convene a Table Lodge of Master Masons at the Victorian Dining Room of the American House Hotel in Ohio Village at 5:30pm, followed by a procession to the Ohio Village Church where a short Masonic Service will be held.  At the conclusion of the service, the brethren will participate in a short tour of the Ohio Village Lodge Room.  A full course dinner will begin at approximately 6:30 pm including the traditional seven toasts, concluding with an address by Brother Batchelder.

This joint event looks to be an excellent opportunity for brethren to join together and celebrate our fraternity.  The total number of brethren who can attend this table lodge is limited  by the size of the venue.  Tickets will be available for sale in early 2014 by the three host Lodges. More information will be communicated in subsequent issues of this newsletter.
