An Amazing Day of Community
Dear Salisbury Academy Parents:

Wow! What an amazing Grandperson's Day we celebrated on Friday. With well over 500 in attendance, Dr. Rob and his students delivered a fun and entertaining program that had everyone tapping their toes and singing along to the well-loved Beatles songs. We would like to say thank you to Kurt Richter and his team of parent volunteers for providing refreshments, decorations, and a warm, friendly setting to enjoy this special day. A big thank you to Bryan Wymbs, Rob Spieler, and Brad Williams for their work in getting everyone safely parked.

The feedback from our guests was heartwarming. So many commented on the community feeling in our school. The sense of family and belonging reminded them of times long ago and brought a sense of hope that the environment here will produce students of character, service, and leadership.

The second part of our day culminated with a beautiful night under the stars enjoying the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival. Fun was had by all who enjoyed pumpkin painting, bowling, corn hole, and the chance to just run and play with friends. Thank you to Coach Wilson for providing refreshments for the event as a Booster Club fundraiser. We greatly appreciate the support of the Mona Lisa and Lee Wallace Family Foundation to bring this event to our community.

Community defined as "a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals" was certainly felt by all on Friday. What a gift it was to be reminded of the gift of community we share here at SA together.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Pumpkins, Community, and Outdoor Adventure at Environmental Film Festival
The air was crisp and the pumpkins turned into works of art on Friday night as SA families and the larger community joined Salisbury Academy in our first-ever environmental film festival. Children decorated and bowled with pumpkins along with other fun fall crafts and games as adults chatted and awaited for the series of adventure films to begin.

Once the show began, everyone in the audience was swept away to fantastic destinations around the globe. The audience was exposed to critical areas of need on our planet and left with a heightened sense of our duty to protect the animals, plants, and ecosystems of our world. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the Mona Lisa & Lee Wallace Foundation for sponsoring this meaningful event!

Coffee and Converstation Nov. 17: The Gift of Failure
We invite you to our first Coffee and Conversation of the year as we revisit our spring announcement of a book discussion using The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey:

November 17 at 8:00 a.m.

This New York Times best-seller has been recommended by many high school and college counselors to help address the issues they are seeing with students needing the opportunity to take more control of their learning environments to prepare them for the future.

Book description: In the tradition of Paul Tough's How Children Succeed and Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, this groundbreaking manifesto focuses on the critical school years when parents must learn to allow their children to experience the disappointment and frustration that occur from life's inevitable problems so that they can grow up to be successful, resilient, and self-reliant adults.

Providing a path toward solutions, Lahey lays out a blueprint with targeted advice for handling homework, report cards, social dynamics, and sports. Most importantly, she sets forth a plan to help parents learn to step back and embrace their children's failures. Hard-hitting yet warm and wise, The Gift of Failure is essential reading for parents, educators, and psychologists nationwide who want to help children succeed.
