This week has been an adventurous one for SA's students! Fifth- and sixth-graders toured Colonial Williamsburg (pictured in front of the Williamsburg capitol building), seventh- and eighth-graders visited our nation's capitol, Washington, D.C., and the third grade had an exciting overnight at Camp Thunderbird.

Experiential Learning at its Best!
Dear Parents of Salisbury Academy:

Wow!  What an exciting week around Salisbury Academy with trips to a local farm, the Rainforest Cafe, overnight field trips to Camp Thunderbird, Washington D.C., and Williamsburg, VA, and a Lego Robotics Championship. All of these wonderful learning experiences are examples of what makes the Salisbury Academy experience so special as students make important connections outside of the classroom to extend their learning. Thank you to the teachers and parent chaperones who gave their time this week to make this all possible.

This Friday is a special night to showcase our art department and music conservatory together! Our Salisbury Academy students have been working on a collaborative project with art teacher, Ms. Chaffee, to design and create a unique "Under the Sea" themed piano for the downtown music display. It will join pianos from nine other middle schools and Rowan Early College that will be housed at various locations in downtown Salisbury for the next five months for anyone to play anytime! There will be a big celebratory unveiling of the pianos at 5:30 on Friday, May 6 with Dr. Rob and his music conservatory students providing entertainment for the "Come Tickle Our Ivories" event.  Come join us at outside of Salisbury Square Antiques and Collectibles for a downtown Friday night out to see their beautiful design and enjoy an evening of family fun and music!

Great things are happening at Salisbury Academy!

Best Regards,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Art teacher Angela Chaffee shares:

In honor of earth day, we looked to nature and artists who work with nature to inspire some artistic explorations. One of the more well-known artists that works with nature and environment is Andy Goldsworthy. His sculptures (like the one pictured below, left) are made entirely with natural materials and are left in their original place of creation to allow nature to slowly reabsorb these art pieces.

For example, Andy Goldsworthy might enter a forest and select leaves of specific color and size to arrange in an organic pattern (such as a line or circle), yet the pattern that he chooses will indicate that the leaves did not fall into this pattern by chance. This pattern or design is then left for the wind and rain to scatter again.

Often when we think of making art, we imagine creating or purchasing a piece of artwork to hang or display in our homes or in a gallery, something long-lasting that may be enjoyed as time passes. We also tend to use specific and synthetic materials (such as glue, or wire, acrylic paint, or metal) to create these pieces of art.
As a way of recognizing the beauty and accessibility of our environment and the temporary aspect of the natural world, students were encouraged to explore and create sculptures and designs from natural objects such as grass, reeds, pinecones, bark, rocks, and feathers.  Due to rain, we were not able to work outside and leave our artwork to become one with the environment, so students were encouraged to dismantle their creations at the end of our work sessions.  This had the added effect of placing emphasis on the act of creation rather than final product, allowing students to engage in art as play rather than production.

Hopefully this sort of activity will encourage students to go into their backyards or local park and to see the objects found there in a new way.  And, hopefully it may encourage all of us to create beauty and art with whatever we find around us.

Field Day activities will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. followed by an extra special lunch.

SA In the News: LEAPing into Giving
You could almost feel the butterfly flapping its wings when Karen Leonard, activity coordinator for Oak Park Retirement, called Salisbury Academy teacher Katie Skalka. Would Salisbury Academy be interested in taking part in the butterfly effect -- a social movement proving that a small act of kindness can be a catalyst for positive change -- Leonard asked over the phone.

On-Site Sports Physicals
May 16 Second Annual Booster Club
On-Site Spring Sports Physical Fundraising Event Information:

On-site Sports physicals will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 16th. We want to thank Dr. Erron Towns & Dr. Ben Ott for volunteering their time again this year! The cost for each physical will be $20 & we will be using the physical forms that are on our school website. We use the NCHSA physical forms. These forms will need to be completed and brought with the student athletes when they come to their scheduled on-site physical. Below are a few parameters that Dr. Towns requested we share for participation:

**To maximize the number of physicals we perform, the on-site physicals will be open to healthy kids without a significant asthma or cardiac history. Ideally, there should be no family history of significant cardiac issues. Specifically, sudden cardiac death, or heart attack before age 50. Those kids can still do sports, they just may require additional screening that is best arranged through their primary care provider. Please also note that these physicals do not take the place of a regular annual doctor visit, especially if a student is needing an immunization.**

The Booster Club will be having volunteers to facilitate the event. The physicals will begin at 5:30 p.m. sharp and be held at 10-minute intervals until 8 p.m. There will be 2 student athletes per time slot. We request that each student athlete arrives no later than 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time in order to assist with things running smoothly. If parents will please email Shakira Humble [email protected] by Wednesday, May 4th to confirm your student athlete will want and be able to participate in receiving an on-site physical on May 16th. After the 4th deadline, time slots will then be determined.

Thanks again to both Dr. Towns and Dr. Ott for supporting our Booster Club! We are looking forward to this event helping facilitate sports physicals for our student athletes. We hope our families will take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing back from everyone!
