Dear Mr. Cartland,

Okay, it seems, I suppose, really self-serving to put this letter in my Advisory, but bear with me...I have a point. I received this a few years ago...my favorite thank-you note ever.

I wanted to personally applaud you for your amazing leadership program. Although, I did not attend,

Hmm...a thank-you note from someone who was not even at my training? How can this be?

I am a direct recipient of the results.

Oh.

During your visit to ________ _________, I noticed an immediate attitude change in my supervisor; ______ _______.

Ahh...nice....

Most importantly the change(s) continued days and weeks that followed your training. Since the training, she and I have had lunch together, where she shared with me that she really wanted to work on her body language, tone, deliverance, and delegation.

Excellent! Follow through is everything in training...and I love how specific the focus is. But neither of these is my main point.

Specifically,

There's that word!

I have noticed a more relaxed and open aura about ______ which has made her much more approachable. She smiles more and even cracks more jokes, which I appreciate on those extra busy days. Her continued efforts to work on her opportunities for growth have made our working relationship feel more like a partnership and less like a supervisor/employee relationship. I enjoyed working with ______ prior to her training with you, but I'm more optimistic than before of our future possibilities.

I really have a fun job when people do something with the training and coaching I give them. Still, even that is not my main point.

Unaware, she has motivated me to set forth new goals for myself to work on, which I truly believe is a direct reflection of your leadership course.

It's amazing how we impact the behaviors of others when we change our own. But that's not my main point either.

Thank you again for such an effective training program for our leaders here at _______ _______. Your program works!

And thank YOU for your very kind note.

Now to my main point...for which you have all, I know, waited breathlessly:

Your people have the largest stake in whether you lead well or not. I promise you, the people that want you to lead best are not your bosses or investors or even customers.

The people who want you to lead best are the people directly affected by it-the people you lead. How grateful this woman was for the progress her manager was making.

You have an impact on your people's lives, both professional and personal, the extent of which you may not realize.

Please realize.
I'd love to hear from you. Reply to this email and let me know your thoughts.

Doug
