New DURIS for color mixing applications
Consumer lighting solutions with DURIS S 5 Color LEDs

For smart lighting solutions and all kinds of colored lighting applications, customers now can rely on the new DURIS S 5 Color LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. There are four color versions - red, amber, green and deep blue - offering high efficacy and excellent temperature stability. The footprint of 3.0 mm x 3.0 mm complies with industrial standards.

All red, amber, green and deep blue DURIS S 5 Color versions can be used in color mixing systems, as well as in combination with white LEDs. They are all based on the same chip technology using phosphor conversion to generate the saturated red, amber and green colors. Therefore they all feature the same electrical behavior and are compatible with the DURIS S 5 White LEDs, which greatly simplifies driver design. In addition, the red and amber DURIS S 5 versions are best in their class for lumen maintenance and temperature stability between 25 and 85 Celsius, reducing the complexity of color management in different conditions.

The use of red and amber in combination with white LEDs can compensate for missing colors in the white spectrum, thereby increasing the color rendering index (CRI) with rich Ra values. Other characteristics include an epoxy-based package and a footprint of 3.0 mm x 3.0 mm.

The green color versions offer an extremely high efficacy of 170 lm/W. This reduces assembly costs as customers need fewer DURIS S 5 Color LEDs to achieve the same brightness level for their applications and can be more flexible in their PCB design.

OSRAM Adds Filament LEDs to its Product Portfolio
SOLERIQ L 38 offers excellent color appearance and quality of light for aesthetic illumination

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors presents SOLERIQ L 38, the first filament LED in this product family. With a long and thin shape, these LEDs provide the basis for filament style lamps and match incandescent lamps in terms of appearance and emission characteristics. SOLERIQ LEDs deliver a uniform appearance in terms of color and can serve as a high-quality light source that is ideal for aesthetic lighting applications in homes, hotels and restaurants.

Each SOLERIQ L 38 has a length of 30 mm and a diameter of 1.8 mm. Similar to a conventional filament, the shape of the SOLERIQ LED - in addition to its 360-degree emission angle and excellent light production quality - make it perfect for use in LED lamps of all wattages as it mimics the appearance of classic light bulbs. SOLERIQ L 38 LEDs are offered in MacAdams Ellipse groups (SDCM) based on color temperature, and binned at a temperature of 85 C, which closely approximates the temperature in the application.

"Customers will benefit from these properties, particularly if they want to install multiple lamps or luminaires fitted with SOLERIQ L 38 in a room," said Martin Wittmann, Marketing and Business Development Manager for General Lighting at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "Incorporating the LEDs in classic lamp production lines is simple. With minor modifications to the manufacturing process, these LEDs can be installed in the lamp in the same way as traditional filaments." Additionally, sorting by forward voltage enables multiple LED filaments to be connected in parallel, resulting in reliable operation with no overloading of individual filaments.

Traditional lighting design and state-of-the-art technology

The SOLERIQ L 38 offers high brightness, similar to all SOLERIQ products, and is available in three different lumen versions of 90, 130 or 140 lumen (lm),enabling solutions for up to 60 W equivalents.  All the versions have an extremely high luminous efficacy of 150 lm/W and provide warm white light (2500 to 4000 Kelvin). Due to a good color rendering index of over 80, the new SOLERIQ L 38 is ideal for indoor lighting, particularly in the home. The main applications include products with a traditional look and also modern interiors, such as classic clear glass lamps with LED filaments.

Company News
Investments of about €3 billion create new growth prospects for OSRAM

- Investments of around €2 billion planned in research and development by 2020
- Additional €1 billion intended for the construction of a new LED chip plant by 2020
- "Diamond" initiative promotes growth and sustained enterprise value
- Until 2020, average annual growth rates of 8% for revenue and 9% for EBITDA expected

The shift in the lighting market toward semiconductor-based technologies is creating new growth opportunities, which OSRAM will consistently seize. To this end, the lighting company will invest around €3 billion in new technologies and applications by 2020. Of this amount, approximately €2 billion will be spent on research and development in order to further strengthen OSRAM's technological leadership and to expand into new markets. Additionally, OSRAM has planned another €1 billion for the construction of a new LED chip plant in Malaysia. This is to unlock additional growth potential, in both the dynamic, technology-driven general lighting markets and niche markets, where OSRAM is already in a good position today. "With a focus on profitability, flexibility and entrepreneurship, following a phase of strategic realignment, we are now launching the 'Diamond' innovation and growth initiative. This means we are switching the focus to sustainable growth, benefitting even stronger from the potential offered by semiconductor-based technologies," said Olaf Berlien, Chief Executive Officer of OSRAM Licht AG.
