Simonton Cancer Center
 Renew!    New Programs!    New Material!
What I like most about change is that it's a synonym for "hope". If you are taking a risk, what you are really saying is, "I believe in tomorrow and I will be part of it." - Linda Ellerbee
                                               Welcome!
The only constant in all of our lives is CHANGE - and this was never more evident for the Simonton Cancer Center than in the last 12 months. We closed one program, and are actively engaged in opening two new locations. We collaborated with universities, 'lost' several valued counselors to their own projects, and had wonderful SCC counselors from the past re-join us. We are excited to report more involvement from young people than ever before which was evident in our December Spartan fundraiser for the SCC's crisis lines. We have had changes within our Board and now a change in direction - re-examining how to best achieve our mission and serve the community at large.
And this isn't all!  WHEW!!

Many of you are also experiencing great change - changes perhaps in your health, your relationships, your job, etc.
Some changes are welcome and some.... well, not so much.
Many of you may be experiencing your changes as a crisis. Some of you may not have been mindful of the small changes that have occurred while you weren't paying attention. But take heart.
Amazing things can happen when you make the decision to take control over what
you DO have power over, ( including your thoughts!) and letting go of that which you don't.

Wishing ALL of you, much courage and enthusiasm as you deal with YOUR changes this year.   Warmly, Karen Simonton, E.D.

The Simonton Cancer Center is delighted to have Claude Lambert, M.D. return to our patient retreat week. Dr. Lambert was a vital part of SCC programming and work in California for over a decade. Close friends with Dr. Simonton, Claude taught in our retreat programs, lectured, and maintained a private practice using the Simonton method with his patients while living in California. Originally from Canada, Dr. Lambert moved to the U.S specifically to become part of our SCC team. Currently, Dr Lambert lives with his wife, Antoinette, in North Carolina, where he continues to spread the word!
                                                          Welcome back, Dr. Lambert!

Good news for our supporters and participants in South Africa!
We were distressed regarding the sudden and abrupt closure of SCC in South Africa and pray this created no problems for anyone. If you were currently enrolled in our training program, we hope you will contact us regarding any questions or concerns. Your status remains valid for both intermediate and advanced training. You are welcome to finish at any of our other locations. It is our understanding that no one has completed certification at this time. If you are from South Africa proper, we hope to have good news soon! Supporters have encouraged the Simonton Cancer Center to return. They have actively searched and found a new and wonderful location. We will keep you informed!
We are grateful for the beauty and use of our former location and wish to extend a heart-felt  "thank you" to Barbara, Patricia, Cindy and the rest of the staff at Bergplass for making it a wonderful experience for participants.

Our Crisis Lines remain free to the public for 2013!
These are our amazing competitors!  SCC is grateful and touched by the support of these young people. Our "Simonton Saints", members of the Spartan Race in Malibu, CA, competed  and raised over $8,000 for our crisis lines this past December.  This was a grueling race/obstacle course, in which, no one got hurt, and everyone agreed they enjoyed it so much they want to do it again this year!
A GIANT "THANK YOU! " TO ALL WHO DONATED TO THIS FUND RAISER!!

 Landscapes of the Mind
by Lawrence LeShan, Ph.D,

and

A Real Emotional Girl: Memoir of Love and Loss

by  Tanya Chernov

We acknowledge our bias and pride in listing the above works.

Larry LeShan is an SCC esteemed board member and Tanya Chernov is the daughter of a remarkable SCC program participant.

Landscapes of the Mind
For years I have followed a simple rule that has served me well:  Read everything Lawrence LeShan writes.  It all started in the 1970s when I was gobsmacked by his seminal book The Medium, the Mystic, and the Physicist. This reading experience significantly rearranged my worldview, after which I could never look at things in the same way. Since then I have been delightfully clobbered by a succession of LeShan's writings on a dazzling array of topics -- psychology, science, meditation, parapsychology, healing, mind-body relationships, and consciousness. In each of these books, LeShan asks penetrating questions that most authorities in our materialism-besotted age simply ignore.

A Real Emotional Girl                  Kirkus Review
In her debut, Los Angeles Review poetry and translation editor, Chernov, probes her grief over losing a much-loved father and the inability of contemporary society to accept profound emotion.... A contemplative, profoundly moving meditation on life, love and death.

The Simonton Cancer Center, in collaboration with Virginia Swain, Director of the Institute for Global Leadership, was delighted to present on 'Imagery and Health' for University of Massachusetts medical students. The session was so well received, they have asked for 2 'repeat performances.'  It speaks volumes that this medical school has chosen to add classes such as this into their elective curriculum.
The University of Massachusetts has always been on the cutting edge in this arena, and we remain hopeful it represents a shift in curriculum that other schools will follow.

Expect this to be a period of needing more rest. This can be a mentally exhausting time and cancer treatments may leave one feeling drained or weak. Although you may feel frustrated with this change in your daily activities, rest as needed - do not fight it. Consider it a gift and congratulate yourself for paying attention to your needs.

Rest and calm are vital components in your framework for healing.
We always enjoy hearing from you and welcome learning new ways we can be of service. Please email us at simontoncancercenter.com or call us at 800 459 3424!
