Humidity - The Ultimate Pitfall of the Plastic Ball
(Courtesy of MHTableTennis) It's been over 2 years now since the plastic ball was formally introduced into competition and, like most players, I have come to accept the new ball and continue on with playing. Most of my quarrels with the ball have been diminished but there is one which comes back to sting me over and over again. Humidity is probably my biggest pet hate when it comes to table tennis, that feeling of hopelessness in humid conditions when the ball constantly fails to make any kind of quality contact with the rubber at all. As a 5th ball attacker, moisture is my biggest enemy when trying to make a good quality heavy spin opening.
While it was difficult before, I never recall it being as difficult as it has been since we changed ball and there is a perfect scientific reason for that. One of the reasons that the plastic ball produces less spin is because of the surface of the ball.
It is commonly known that celluloid has an almost unseen layer of grip on the...Read More

Anticipation Basics
(Courtesy of Samson Dubina)Many of my students think that they can read-my-mind.  They can't read-my-mind but they can read-my-racket.  Instead of merely "guessing" where the next ball is going, they should be watching my racket and adjusting based on what they "see".
As soon as my student his the ball, my student should have a good idea in general about what type of shot I might hit next.  For example, if they serve a short low backspin serve, they know that I will push or flip.  If they serve a long serve, they know that I will loop.  They also know that if they serve long to my forehand that the most dangerous return is a loop wide to their forehand.  So, as soon as they serve deep to my forehand, they should prepare for the deep ball wide to their forehand while keeping their racket in front and being ready to adjust.
Next, my student needs to watch my racket.  By watching the racket angle

History of USATT - Volume XVIII - Chapter 4
(Courtesy of Tim Boggan) 1990 August Tournaments
The XXIV AAU/USA Junior National Championships were held in St. Petersburg, Florida, August 2-4. The newly completed 110 million dollar Suncoast Dome in St. Petersburg was the focal point of the "games". Seven sports were run simultaneously in the dome (basketball, boxing, gymnastics, karate, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling) and additionally on the evening of Wednesday, August 1, the spectacular opening ceremonies took place in the dome.
The opening ceremonies, including the parade of athletes and lighting of the torch, is usually a long drawn-out affair with thousands of distracted, noisy athletes moving in and out of the seating areas wanting to leave long before the festivities concluded. This year was an exception , not in terms of length - the athletes were committed from 6:30 to 11:00pm  - but in the way the program was arranged...Read More
