Will Shortz and the Ping-Pong Prodigy
(Courtesy of Charles Bethea/The New Yorker
Five years ago, dipping into the small fortune that his crossword and Sudoku puzzles have brought him, the Times crossword editor Will Shortz bought an old "junk dealer's warehouse," near his home in Pleasantville, New York, and-because puzzles aren't his only obsession-turned fourteen thousand square feet of it into a world-class Ping-Pong facility. In late October, Westchester Table Tennis Center hosted one of Shortz's monthly club tournaments, which are the largest in the United States, boasting as much as seven thousand dollars in cash prizes and a four-star rating from USA Table Tennis. They regularly draw top talent from New York and beyond: Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, Poland, India, Mexico, Switzerland, and, of course, China.

Table tennis is one of the most popular sports in China. Since it... Read More

It is far too common to see players involved in self-recrimination between points: A player yelling at himself "What an idiot!" is not making a diagnosis but rather is creating a self-fulfilling prediction of future performance. In the time it takes to render self-deprecating condemnation, the opportunity for analysis has passed and the next point is about to begin without the thoughtful self-correction needed to adapt to the unstable environments of table tennis. With a clear understanding of the... Read More
11 Questions with Scott Gordon
Q: Why do you play?
A: When I quit playing competitive chess, I found myself playing table tennis a lot more. I guess my psyche needs a competitive outlet.
Q: Which is your favorite tournament?
A: Domestically, I enjoy the US Open. Internationally, there was a hardbat event in Nordhorn Germany that was incredibly fun. There were about 60 players and the director just kept telling us who to play. At the end, he made a list of how everyone placed, 1-through-60. Then there was a big feast afterwards outside behind the playing hall. Franz Huermann played in that tournament.
Q: Who is your primary nemesis?
A: Kevin Au kills me every time we play. I only get about 1 or 2 points. Sure, he's better than me, but honestly I think I'd do better against Ma Long. There's also... Read More
Mishel Levinski - Interview
(Courtesy of Rahul Acharya) 20 year old Mishel Levinski immigrated to the U.S. about four years ago when his family chose to relocate. Originally from Beer Sheva, Israel, Mishel had already accomplished a lot in terms of table tennis before he moved here to be with his relatives. He had climbed up the ladder from the Israeli Cadet National Team to the Junior Team at the young age of just 12. In fact, he continued to play at the national level right until the time that he left the country in 2011.

1. You are at your highest USATT rating currently. Tell us what you've been up to in terms of table tennis to see this big leap.

I think that I have been able to improve my mental game. Mentality is a much bigger part of the game than most people think. I've been able to concentrate... Read More
Transitioning More Quickly
(Courtesy of Han Xiao for Butterfly Table TennisUsually, players above a certain level can practice very comfortably when they know where the ball is going. Although the quality of each player's shots may vary, generally players can drill quite consistently when the drill is fixed. When drills become more randomized, some players have trouble transitioning when they aren't sure where the next ball is going. This results in being late to the ball or making outright errors due to not being ready to hit the next shot.

The most common type of transition that players need to make is when they move laterally and need to cover both the forehand and the backhand side, with more advanced players also able to comfortably cover their middle. The... Read More

Adam Bobrow Goes Courtside with Petrissa Solja
(Courtesy of Adam Bobrow) From Adam Bobrow's Facebook page:

"It's a very empowering and encouraging feeling when someone gives you an opportunity that would petrify many with nervousness but you just jump into the mix and feel right at home. ITTF asked me on the day of... if I would be able to do an on court, on-camera interview for the live TV broadcast around the world. I even did a little beatbox to test the mic (and entertain the crowd... mix it up a bit) right before we went live.

History of USATT - Volume XVI - Chapter 15
(Tim Boggan) 1988: October Tournaments. 1988: Hall of Fame Open/1989 U.S. World Team Decided.

Michael Sing (TTT, Dec., 1988, 37) reports on the 55-entry October 1 Sacramento Open: "In the Open round robin, James Therriault, who directed the tournament, came out on top again, beating runner-up Julie Ou and 3rd place finisher Masaaki Tajima with his lobbing and chopping style. Bother of these Therriault matches went to three games and were filled with long rallies that kept the audience involved.

"As is often the case, it wasn't only the top-ranked players that drew the spectators' attention. In Junior action, 10 year-old Sally Dahlin (rated 797) and seven year-old Phillip Lim (rated 854) battled it out in an U-1000 quarterfinal - with... Read More
