You Play Ping Pong in Your Basement... THIS is Table Tennis
(MontgomeryMag.com) When my son was in high school, he and I had some knockdown, drag-out rec room ping-pong matches. He was better than me, but either one of us could beat aanyone in the neighborhood, surrounding neighborhoods or local rec center.
When the Olympic year of 2012 came around, he jokingly said he was going to try to make the American squad, at which point it dawned on us that before he made plans for London, we should test our games on a bigger stage.
So we found the Maryland Table Tennis Center and spent an evening in the converted Gaithersburg warehouse buying custom-fit paddles and playing a few games while enjoying the spaciousness of a place that offered more elbow room than... Read More

A: My favorite tournaments are the US Open & US Nationals. Especially is playing the doubles with Dave Sakai.
Q: Who is your primary Nemesis?

When Training, Push the Limits!
(Samson Dubina) When doing drills with a training partner, choose drills that are game-like as well as drills that push your limits. If you are doing a basic backhand to backhand rally for one hour per day and averaging 50-100 balls each rally, then you probably aren't pushing the limits.
I recommend that you do random drills where your training partner will block with his backhand, and you will loop using your backhand and forehand. The blocker is allowed to place the ball anywhere on the table. Try to average at least 5-10 balls each rally. Watch the blocker's racket carefully so that you can project where the ball will be placed. If you are in good position, then take a full swing with good spin and moderate speed. If you are surprised by an unusual block, then shorten your backswing while maintaining spin and consistency... Read More

What to Think About During a Match
(Larry Hodges) Have you ever been in a close match, began to think about winning and losing, and fell apart and lost? Or perhaps you were winning, began to think about it, and again fell apart and lost. It's almost certain that you have been in both scenarios. So how do you avoid this?
A key thing is to have something else to think about. The mind can only think about one thing at a time. As an experiment, try thinking about what serve you might use in a match against a specific player you play regularly, and see if you can think about winning and losing at the same time. You can't - in fact, the very thinking about what serve to do will likely wipe away most nervousness as nervousness comes from... Read More
