Free training for emergency preparedness

Residents have an opportunity to take a free course on emergency and disaster preparedness to learn basic disaster response skills including fire safety, search and rescue and more.

When emergencies or disasters hit, professional responders can become overwhelmed with calls for help. Taking this course can help residents know how to respond to an emergency until professionals can reach them. After completing the course, participants will be encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness in their communities.

The course is open to 40 participants, and the schedule is outlined below. Participants must attend all days to complete the course. Training will be at in the Employee Relations Training Room at Lakewood City Hall, 480 S. Allison Parkway.

* 6-9 p.m., April 3
* 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., April 5
* 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., April 12
* Class exercise on June 22, with location to be determined

This course is sponsored by Lakewood's Office of Emergency Management, Denver's Office of Emergency Management, Homeland Security and others.
