Tips for Creating a Family Calendar
A family calendar can be a great way to coordinate the busy schedules of everyone in your family. Here are a few tips to get started on creating your own Family Calendar:
The Basics
Be sure to include everyone's various activities, including who is responsible for transportation. Add school events and holidays that school will be closed. Include birthdays and other special days your family celebrates (parents' anniversary, Grandma's birthday).
Chore Charts
Chores aren't just for kids, including both kid and parent chores on the calendar helps kids know what they're expected to do each day and lets them know they're a part of "Team Family"!
Don't Forget Date Nights!
Set aside time for the adults to go be adults without the children. Schedule a sitter and get some popcorn and a movie for the kids, so everyone has a night to look forward to.
Schedule in Family Time as a Priority
Figure out what your family likes doing together, or make a list of things to try together and take turns choosing from the list.
By person, type of event/activity, however makes sense for your family.
Be Flexible
Just because it's written down doesn't mean it's carved in stone.
Location
Make it easy to access for everyone in the family, a whiteboard on the fridge works great, or with older kids, this may mean making it accessible electronically.
TIP! Using online calendars with FREE collaboration tools like GMail can be very easy. Create a GMail account for each family member - then using Mom or Dad's account create "Family Calendar". Then simply share this Calendar with all of your family member GMail accounts. (Everyone can then access the calendar/set reminders from Phone or any Electronic device.) https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/2465776?hl=en
Update Weekly
Create a routine for updating the calendar. Creating a space near the calendar for field trip forms, soccer sign up sheets, and other important papers can help ensure these activities get added to the calendar. Review the calendar weekly with everyone to make sure everything is included and up to date.
