Carbon Monoxide Safety

January is the worst month for carbon monoxide poisoning.   Cold weather increases the use of gas-powered furnaces as well as the use of risky alternative heating and power sources during power outages. Now is a good time to remember the following safety tips to prevent CO poisoning:

* Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil or coal-burning appliance inspected and serviced by a qualified technician every year.
* Install battery-operated CO detectors on every level of your home.
* Don't use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside the home, basement or garage or outside the home near a window.

*Clear snow and ice from exhaust vents and intake air vents for gas appliances to prevent carbon monoxide from accumulating in your home.
* Don't burn anything in an unvented stove or fireplace.
* Don't let a vehicle idle inside a garage attached to a house, even if the garage door is left open.
* Don't heat a house with a gas oven.

If a CO detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911 from outside. Seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and if you or someone in your household is feeling dizzy, light-headed or nauseated.

Easy Resolutions
Many people try to make at least one New Years Resolution.  Most of the time it is health related.  Here are some new ideas to think about in 2013.

Turn Your Cell Phone Off

Why not try to live in the moment a little more?
Turn your cell phone off -- completely -- during work and social occasions.  It will also make face-to-face time more valuable and productive.

Eat at Home

Why not set a goal of eating in more? You are likely to hone new skills in the kitchen, eat healthier, save some money, and enjoy quality time working creatively with your hands.

Bring back the Phone Call

Yes, texts are a really efficient way of reaching somebody -- it's also arguably a better way of not interrupting the person you're trying to get in touch with. When was the last time you had a long phone conversation? Next time you want to contact someone, try to call them instead of texting.

Turn off the Internet

Consider turning off the Internet at 10 pm every night and getting your content fix out of a book instead!
Leave your credit cards at home

An easy way of forcing this considerate financial behavior is to leave your credit cards at home. This way you can only spend whatever cash you walk out with.

Cut the Gossip

Many people resolve to not gossip, but why not go a step further? Don't let other people gossip to you. You'll be seen as a trustworthy person, and you'll probably be engaged in much more productive conversations.

Battling Cabin Fever
Here are some tips to help you battle the winter blues!

Get Plenty of Rest

Bears hibernate for months on end. That's what winter is for. Sleeping is a great form of escape and also a way to rest up for the exciting spring and summer ahead. If you can't fall asleep on cue, help it along by reading dull materials, or get some meditation CDs that help you relax.

Get a full spectrum lamp

Since natural sunlight is scarce, boost up your mood with a light that simulates it. They are available at home furnishing stores or online.

Indulge in a hobby

Once you're done sleeping, dig out something fun to do. Perhaps you love to knit but haven't touched the needles in ages. Maybe you want to brush up on your painting skills.

Organize

Even less creative endeavors, like organizing that closet  that always has stuff falling out on your head, can keep you busy and feeling productive.

Go outside anyway

When you've taken all the indoors you can take, suit up and go out. Try to pick a day that is not infused with a raging storm and make sure to dress properly - hat, gloves, boots, thick coat, long johns, and a scarf - go for the works.

Get out of town

The most drastic of cabin fever cases will benefit greatly from a ticket to the Bahamas. If you cannot afford such a trip, take a mini-vacation to a spa, gym or even a shopping mall where you can move around and revitalize yourself.
